work names

I saw the ugliest (in my opinion) sibset of teenage girls today: Chanel, Fannie, and Nikita.

Also had to add a baby boy named Van, which I thought was awful, but I can only guess it was a nod to the mother's maiden name (Van Something).  He joined brother Nixon.

And because I have to check overage dependants, I see a lot of clusters of names that were popular in specific years.  Example:  there were 3 girls born in April 1991 to employees of a certain company:  Randee, Randie, and Randi.  Sometimes it's fun to see the trends and sometimes I just despair for humanity.

Years ago, my stepmother was a pediatric nurse at UCLA. One of her patients was "so grateful" that when she finally gave birth to her triplets, she named them all after my stepmother. Debra, Deborah, and Debrah.

I was 11 or 12 at the time and even then I was thinking, "this bitch CRAZY."

Urgh, Chanel and Fannie...just...no. Nikita, I don't mind so much and usually I don't really care for the whole 'sibset' thing but where the hell did they pull those three from? So different!

I don't think Chanel, Fannie, and Nikita are that bad. At least they are real names. It's not like their mother made up names or did some sort of speKial speLing. Fannie is the worse but maybe it short for Frances. I love Frances and was seriously thinking of naming my daughter that but I didn't want her called Fannie.

Sounds like they're french, actually. *shrug* I have 2 friends called Fanny.

Not a fan of the judgemental tone sometimes in this comm, though. (Not directed at you personally, just a general observation.)

I like Nikita (despite Krushchev). And I once met a little girl named Nixon, though I'm not sure that's the president to use as a namesake...

That is both flattering and frightening.

I'm not even touching the girls' names because honestly I don't like any of them and have nothing nice to say. Van isn't so bad though. It's a real name as far as I know. Norman Reedus's character in Floating is called Van.

You could call her Frannie. My nanny is a Frances and I've always liked the name. We just call her nanny though (she's not our grandma, she was our actual nanny).

That is a strange mix of names. It's interesting to see parents' naming style change between children.

You're right..they're not bad names per se, but it's certainly an odd mix. Chanel seems very 80s/90s to me, Fannie is incredibly old-fashioned.

Van is a legitimate name, so I'm not sure what the big deal is. It's not like he'd be confused for the vehicle.

Van reminds me of Van Morrison. I like it, and we considered using it as a nickname for our son Donovan, but it didn't take.
