Do you think Adele is an acceptable nickname for Madeleine? Also how do you feel about the name Adele considering the singer Adele is all over the radio/tv? If you love the name would that stop you from using it? I like the singer and all but wouldn't want people to think I named my daughter after her.

I love the name and wanted to use it 3 years ago. I'm not sure I would anymore, because I don't like popular names, and she does make it more popular. But, I think it also helps make the name seem more "normal" for those who don't like out-there names, so I would be happy to see it around regardless of her.

No, IMO Adele doesn't sound or seem anything like Madeline and therefore would be a weird NN. Though, hell, you can name her Madeline and call her anything you want!

And, I see the nn, but would never use it and it probably wouldn't stick unless you only called her Adele. I love Madeleine, but would never use it thanks to the nn Maddy.

As for Adele, if you like it, use it. I went to uni and school with Adeles in the 80s and 90s. It's not a new, 'trendy' name. It's been around forever.

Though I guess it depends on where you come from. In Australia, New Zealand, the UK -- Adele is not that uncommon.

Thats my issue with Madeleine too- serious dislike for Maddy. I also prefer names that are not popular. My name is Aspen and I love it- I'd love to find a different name for a girl that isn't "strange" or hard to spell. Any suggestions? What did you use for your girl?

I'm in Canada and have only met one Adele- she is about 25. I'm pretty sure people would assume it is after the singer, thats what Hubby thinks therefore does not want to use it.

I've liked the name Adele since the first season of True Blood (Sookies grandmother lol) but I hesitate on using it now because of the singer also.

I have a Cressa, which is a Greek word "golden" that is also tied to the name Cressida. And, a Cora, which is also Greek.

I agree, I'm in the US and have never heard it - I thought you were from UK until the last sentence there. I think all husbands are going to think of the singer... But that doesn't mean it's not a name on it's own.

I love both Madeleine and Adele, but I don't see Adele as a nickname for Madeleine. A common nickname for Madeleine here is Mado...As for the connection to the singer, it really depends where you live and how popular she is over there I guess...I'm in French Canada and Adèle is a name that you hear occasionally but isn't super popular. I don't think the singer is extremely well known over here. I've only recently discovered her myself...

Adele as a nickname for Madeleine...is pushing it for me.
Adele isn't a common name here (US), so I automatically think of the singer. Even if I loved the name, I probably wouldn't use it. Hmmm...If I had a child right now, I wouldn't use it, but maybe years down the line when singer's hype died down some? I might.

I think Adelaide to Adele would make more sense as a nn. I don't get Adele from Madeleine, though.

As famous as the singer is, I always think about my childhood neighbor when I hear the name Adele. I think if people get to know your daughter, the singer will be replaced in their minds.

I realized using the NN Adele was a stretch but the letters are there so I thought I'd ask. :)

I like the other suggestions but my close friend named her daughter Adelaine last year so I wouldn't choose something as close as Adelaide.

I'll post again soon with my list of favorites and ask for suggestions because I still feel like we haven't found the perfect name.

Totally late to the party here, but what about Adele as a middle name? I'm big into name meanings (Behind the Name is one of my fave sites) and if you follow Adele to it's roots (Adele > Adèle > Adela) it means "noble."

For a girl's name I've always liked Zoey Adele. Zoey means "life" and Adele means "noble" = "noble life." :)
