[identity profile] eveyalecia.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A radio host from my area just had a baby girl named Alexandra, but they're going to call her Zoe.

I like both names individually, but I think using Zoe as a nickname for Alexandra is a little weird.  WDYT?

I kind of like Zoe as a nickname. I've never liked it on its own as a full name, but I think it works nicely as a nickname.

I must be missing something... The X sound is supposed to sound like the Z from Zoe?

Ahh, I say it with the Z sound (Alex zandra, but a softer Z), so it works for me. But yeah, if someone is saying it with the ks sound, it doesn't make sense.

What? It sounds like they couldn't decide between two names. Which is totally understandable, but I don't see how that makes Zoe a nickname for Alexandra. I mean the X kind of makes a Z sound, but it is also a Zan sound, not Zo.

It sounds like me trying to convince my husband "See, we could name her Alice and use Oona as nickname!" Just wishful thinking.

Is it possible Zoe is the middle name? Otherwise, yeah, that's odd.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Unless that's her middle name, I fail to see how Zoe works as a nickname for Alexandra.

I typically maintain that nicknames do not have to be derivatives of the given name, though I agree it is a little weird to use a completely different (and full) given name as a nickname for someone with a different name.

Then again, my grandfather used to call my uncle "Steve", even though his name is Mark. Yes, grandpa definitely was a weird one...

It kind of reminds me of how owners of show dogs give them some fancy name like like Oregonia Salaam Mishmash and then actually call the dog "Henry." The names have nothing whatsoever to do with each other!
