[identity profile] ladydreamfire.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My friend is having a girl in July. The baby is to be named Hadassa, from the bible. No clue on what middle name is going to be yet.

I mean, I knew it was going to be a biblical name, my friend is absolutely super religious so it was never going to be anything else but from the Bible. But I confess to not knowing of Hadassa. Apparently it means Myrtle Tree. I think Haddie/Hattie would be an adorable nickname. The first name, while not being anything close to my style is actually growing on me a bit. WDYT?

I actually quite like it! It's not my style at all, but it's got a really nice sound to it. It's different without being made up and ridiculous.

Not my style, but I think it's lovely... and versatile enough if the little girl ends up not liking it herself. Like you said, Haddie is an adorable nickname.

Pretty sure that Hadassa is the Jewish name that Queen Esther went by before marrying the King of Persia.

I like it, but my name is Esther, so I had heard of it before.

There are very few girl names in the Bible to begin with, so I really like that your friend chose a less common one.

I actually kinda like it...I think! I'm not really sure either! And totally agree with cute nickname possibilities. :D I always try to look up some cute, unique biblical names (even though I'm not religious...just seems like there should be some unique and meaningful names in there, ya know?) but never see anything I'm really impressed by.

I'll have to look up pronunciation, that could factor into whether or not I liked it :P I'm totally gonna be thinking about this one and possible middle names tonite too lol

I think it's cute. there was a user round these parts whose username was Hadassa. IIRC, she was very religious (or maybe I just got that impression based on her username). I don't know if it was actually her name.

Haddie/Hattie would be cute. I also think Dessa would be pretty.

I came in to say that it's one letter away from Badass-a :(

I've heard of Hadassa before, I think associated with Judiasm. If I hadn't, I would probably think it was Saudi Arabian. I like the way it sounds but I feel like the girl would need to look pretty ethnic to pull it off well.

Hadassa is unusual, but pretty. And Haddie/Hattie is very cute. Is it possible she might go with a more familiar biblical name for the middle name like Hadassa Naomi, Hadassa Mary, Hadassa Ruth, or something like that?

Huh. It's funny, because Hadassah is the hip, trendy Israeli version of Esther. Neither Esther or Hadassah is really my style, but normally the joke is that if you are super Orthodox and live in the US, you name your daughter Esther, but if you are more secular and live in Israel, it is Hadassah. The major Jewish Women's Organization is also called Hadassah, and there are a bunch of Hadassah hospitals everywhere.

But she is spelling it without an H at the end? I never thought of Haddie/Hattie as a nickname, but I really like it!

I feel like I might have heard it before... but I really like it. Don't think I could pull it off though.

When I was studying latin/history in uni, I met a girl named Elissar (I think?) and she said it was kind of the middle-eastern version of Dido.

I love Haddie! Is it usually a nn of Hadassa or is it short for any other names?

Hadassah is currently my top name for a girl, so I'm a big fan (just not the spelling without the H). It does mean myrtle, and it was Queen Esther's Hebrew birth name. I think your friend choosing it does reflect how 'super religious' she is, because Hadassah is actually only mentioned once in the Bible. Haddie or Dass are the nicknames I'd use.
