[identity profile] xariana.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I absolutely fell in love with this community and I have spent a lot of time happily scrolling through entries, so thank you all for your awesome community :) I have a spelling query I've been humming and hawing over for ages and thought I'd bring it here. Actually, there's two.

The first is Marissa / Marisa - I can actually never decide which one I like better - thoughts? The first is a typo, which annoys me a bit but I still think it looks sweet

The second is that I love the name Lily but I love a bit of an odd spelling for it: Lileigh - which doesn't fit with my usual, traditional spelling rule and is potentially going to be super annoying, what with spelling out etc. but also looks kind of cool...?

WDYT?

I think I might prefer it with one S, but with the two different spellings it has potential for actually being pronounced differently which is cool :)

Lily is one of my favourite names but I'm really not overly keen on Lileigh. Kinda makes me want to say it Li-Lay.

I like Marissa. I want to say Marisa as muh REE suh.

Lileigh is awful. I keep saying it Lih LAY. It's a headache of a name.

Marissa/Marisa are two different names to me, so I'm no real help.

To me, Lily is Lily or Lilly (Prefer one L). A good friend of mine's daughter is Lilee, because everyone on her side of the family have names ending in double e, but even though I know it's "tradition", I don't care for.

I agree with your thoughts on Lileigh. It looks like a spelling for something else entirely.

Me, I like Marissa with two 's's.

I like Marisa, but both are good. Like the above poster said, it's also nice that there is the potential for them to be pronounced slightly different ways, and I'm a bit of a fan of both.

I absolutely love Lily. Lileigh, on the other hand... yergch. Definitely makes me want to say Li-LAY, and honestly... Lily has a lovely association in it's traditionally spelled form. Lileigh just looks silly to me. Just my opinion though, I'm not a big fan of innovative spellings.

I've only ever seen it spelled Marissa. I think I like it better with one S.

I like Lily/Lilly better. It took me a second to realize that Lileigh was Lily.

I prefer Marissa. I want to pronounce Marisa like "Mariza", but that's probably because I'm French. I love Lily but I really don't care for Lileigh.

As others have said, I read Marissa as Muh-RIS-uh, Marisa as Muh-REE-suh, and Liliegh as LYE-lee. I'm not a fan of Lileigh (or the spelling I'm about to suggest actually but...) Maybe if you spell it Lilleigh it would get the right pronunciation and still have pretty much the look you like.

I prefer Marissa, and I read Lileigh as "LIE-lee"

I had the same exact pronunciation for Lileigh as lorienellen. It's your choice of course, but there's going to be a lot of correcting about how you pronounce it. It won't matter for your close friends and family since they'll know her from birth, but it's something she'll have to deal with outside the home and growing up. Just something to consider. :)

And as for Marissa/Marisa, I'd say either spelling is great. I've seen both used, and there's never confusion.

And may I just say, welcome to the community!!! <3 I'm fairly new myself, I think about a month, but I love it here. I check this community like 4 or 5 times a day lol.

To me there's a definite difference. It's my best friend's name so we've talked about it at length!! :)

Marisa rhymes with Theresa.
Marissa rhymes with Clarissa.

If you want that "ISSA" ending without any confusion, I'd go with the 2nd spelling, even though some people do pronounce the first one that way too.

I like Lileigh but might want to say it "La-LAY" or something at first glance. I think you can get away with more wacky spellings in middle names, if that matters.

Both are pretty and totally a matter of taste, no right or wrong answers. :)

I've known both Marissas and Marisas. Marissa is pronounced muh-RIS-a and Marisa is pronounced muh-REE-sa. If it makes any difference, both Marisas that I know are hispanic.

I wouldn't even see Lily in looking at Lileigh. I would be tempted initially to pronounce is li-LAY, like it rhymes with sleigh.

I don't pronounce them the same. Ma-ris-uh and Ma-ree-sa. The latter sounds kind of awkward to me. =/
Reading Lileigh, I wouldn't come up with Lily. I want to read it as Lye-leigh...

I prefer Marisa, but I might be biased since that's how my best friend from middle school and high school spells it.

I agree with a comment above that Lileigh looks like it would be pronounced "Lil-ay". But Marisa Lily is a very pretty combination.

When I see Marisa, I want to say Mah-REEEEEZZZZ-ah. Marissa is more mah-riss-ah

I work with a Marisa, pronounced Muh-ree-sa. She always corrects people if they say it as Muh-riss-ah. For ease of pronunciation, I'd go with Marissa.
