Yesterday, I ended up going through my grandmother's senior yearbook (class of 1947) and my mother's (class of 1975), and I was amazed at how the names changed and stayed the same over the course of the 28-year period, especially since they both went to the same all-girls, Catholic high school (somewhat by coincidence).  I thought this community might be interested in it.

Those middle names! It must have been boring to be a teacher back then.

Come to think of it, I don't know anyone with Marie as a first name but a thousand people with Marie as a middle.

My favorites:
older class- Shirley. I have always liked this name, possibly due to Shirley Temple.
newer class- Francesca and Civita.

Yeah, and some names are so close if not repeating exactly (so many combinations with Joan and Mary).

Same here. I think Marie is popular as a middle name because it's two syllables but simple and not too old-fashioned or out of the ordinary. I think Lynn began to replace it during the '80s, and now Grace.

I agree with you about Joan Judge---something about that combination just clicks (Judge is probably a family name).

Yes, I think variety came in when parents realized they could get away with not naming their kids after saints (or the Virgin Mother) all the time. Marie/Mary probably popped up a lot for both reasons.

Victoria is my favorite in that group, too. I love Adria Leigh, Marion Adele, Jane Elizabeth, and Michele Elise, too.

Marguerite was my grandmother's name. My aunt Claire named her eldest daughter Marguerite Elizabeth (her other daughter is Jillian Claire).

Do you go by Mary or always Mary Grace? She's always MaryGrace never just Mary or Grace.

I go by Mary Grace, always. Or M.G. Sometimes people at work or school say "Mary" and it sounds...weird. (A few relatives can get away with it because they've been do it for so long, though.) It might happen to her as she gets older because "Mary + Middle Name" isn't a common name combination anymore. Though no one would call Mary-Kate Olsen "Mary Olsen", would they?
