When I worked daycare there was a little girl named Saphira (sa-FIR-ah). It was the most unusual name I came across there. She was a highly intelligent mean little girl.

Sounds like Mom tried to combine Sapphire and Sephora. Nothing like gemstones and makeup. I don't care for it, but it's not horrible and kind of rolls right of the tongue.

That's the name of the dragon from Eragon, except it's pronounced Suh-FEAR-uh. I don't think it's that bad, although I would always want to pronounce it like the dragon.

Sounds like the female version of the Final Fantasy villain, Sephiroth, hahaa. Who was also more than a little intelligent and mean....

I've met a Safira. I don't think it's that odd - to me, it sounds like "sapphire" was made into a name. It's a little too frilly for my taste, but still ok.

There's a fairly well-known Bible story about Ananias and Sapphira -- it's not exactly complimentary though! ;)

I like the name Sapphira. I say it sa-FEAR-uh though.

Saphir is the French word for sapphire, maybe the mum heard that and tacked on a diminutive "a"?

Without knowing about the dragon, that was my guess at how it would be pronounced.
