[identity profile] ghostpassenger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I saw one of the Birth Announcement updates and said to myself...I can't believe I haven't brought this up yet. Where I am from (Youngstown, Ohio, US) names feel...pretty uninspired. I am living in Leeds, UK where the names seem creative/different/unique.

I decided to put them up for you to compare...or gawk at for potential names for your own purposes.

Some births in Youngstown Ohio
Boys
Britney
Aaron
Dennis
Girls
Heather
Erica
Stella Aurora
Erin Lee
Melisa
Alaina Jane

(One thing I noticed is that there were many, many, many more girls than boys born in this month long time period. Seriously, I got tired of looking for boys to fill this out and make it a little even. Also Apparently in Youngstown we hate sharing middle names.)
Some births in Leeds, Uk

Anyone moved to a different place (anywhere) and noticed a difference like this?

I don't notice that much of a difference between the two sets, honestly.

I like:
Stella Aurora
Alaina Jane
Ruby Wren (though I don't like them so well together)
Amelie
Elizabeth
Beatrice

I have to say as someone with young children in the UK, the names might sound more unusual but the same ones are very overused.
Names I hear a lot are Amelie, Amelia, Ava, Evie, Ella, Eva, sophie, sophia, Lily, Olivia, maisy, gracie, (girls)

Oliver, jack, Noah, Ethan, alfie, Harry, William, Finlay, etc.

That said, they're not as popular in the north of England. For example my Son is called Finnian, or Finn, which they are used to down here, but when I'm in Leeds I have to repeat it to people a lot or they think I'm saying Ben.

You won't find many Stella's in the UK as it's the name of a beer!

I find it strange how different popular French names are too, considering how close they are and how many names chosen in Britain are from different countries/languages.
The no 1 baby name in France is Enzo. I can honestly say I've never come across one over here!

I knew a family who just picked brand names for their kids. They had Mercedes (I know this is a french name, I don't think they did!) Levi (jeans) Harley (Harley Davison motorcycles) Lexus (cars) and a few more I think I've blocked out!

I moved from England to Wales, and that was a culture shock and a half.

The difference isn't huge, although the U.K. names show that "old-fashioned" naming trend that's catching on in the U.S. Britney for a boy? I hope he never listens to any late-1990s pop music...

Amelia, Ava, Ella, Eva, Sophie, Sophia, Lily, Olivia, and Grace are all pretty popular in the U.S. right now---they're all in the Top 100, but "Gracie" fell back down a couple of years ago (though it's definitely a popular nickname).

The only boys' names there that aren't in the Top 100 in the U.S. are Alfie, Harry, and Finlay (though I think Finn is gaining popularity).

I moved from Ohio to Colorado and haven't noticed a huge difference. I don't think I met an Aiden/Caden/Jaden in OH but have met a lot here though.
