[identity profile] daisy1028.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So my husband and I are TTC and I think picking out a name is the hardest thing to do. Because you want something you like, and really hope your kid doesn't grow up hating his/her name or resent you for having a "weird" name. We both like names that are different and not common. Our last name is kind of tricky so it's hard to get names that we agree on that actually flow well with our last name. The girls' middle names will be Marie since that it my moms middle name so I need a first name that goes with Marie as a middle name. For boys we would probably go with Mitchell since that is my husbands middle name. That's about all I have for now...opinions welcomed  :)

Girls:
Emma ( I love, my husband doesn't)
Emily
Khloe
Karolyn
Vanessa
Kasey or Casey
Mia

Boy:
Kevin
Ian
(my husbands name)
Mitchell ( Ian likes it, I'm okay with it. Not sure if I could live with it) I have commitment issues, I like this now but might not like them weeks, months, years from now..lol
Sean
James

Aiden
Thomas
( I like the full name, I wouldn't like if people shortened it for tom or tommy which is what people will probably do)
Anthony( same as thomas, I like the full name. I just wouldn't like it to be shortened for tony)

I worked with a Thomas who never went by Tom. A few people called him Tom, but he always introduced himself as Thomas and never answered to any nicknames. It might be some effort, but I don't think its impossible to keep people from shortening it.

Why Carolyn with a K? Is that a usual spelling? If it is, ignore my comment... if not you might consider unusual spellings as being something your child will resent growing up (since that is part of your considerations).

Emma, Emily, Chloe, and Mia are all top ten, and pretty common. Spelling it with a K doesn't make it different; it's still said the same. I like Vanessa and Carolyn.

James, Aiden, and Anthony are also really popular baby names. I like Kevin and James. As for shortening names, my husband is Anthony, and he never goes by Tony. I went to school with quite a few other Anthonys who went by the full name and not Tony.

Some of these are actually really common and popular. Emma, Khloe and Mia really scream "trendy" to me. Although, I very much like Emma, and I think Chloe and Mia are ok--but I think Mia seems like a nickname not a full name. James and Aiden are extremely common as well. Although I like both again, but I prefer Aidan spelled that way.

So, I like most of your choices, but I prefer Carolyn--the only names that I don't like are Casey, and Anthony.

I really like Mia, its pretty. For boys I like Sean and Anthony, I mostly like Anthony because of the nickname Tony. haha.

Emma and Emily, while very pretty, are just too common for my taste (although my taste doesn't matter one whit to your decision!) I like Carolyn, but not with a K. (Have a name one letter off from the normal my whole life really makes me frown on kreeaytyve spellings.)

I love Mitchell with the nickname "Mitch." For some reason it's really grabbing me! It's very masculine without trying too hard, not too common but not freakish or bizarre. Great name!

My mom's name is Carol Marie and she named my brother Anthony. He's now in his 20s and hasn't shortened it to Tony. I don't think anyone has even tried. Although now that I'm expecting, he said something about Uncle Tony sounding cool. My mom also didn't want people to shorten it. So I think if you like a name, you can just always call them by the full name and people will catch on.

I just don't like the look of Khloe and Karolyn. I really love Mia, but I'm not sure how good Mia Marie sounds. (Love Marie, though.)

I have a really wonderful college student in some of my classes named Mitchell -- it's made me like the name!

My mom is Carolyn, and she ALWAYS gets confused for Caroline on things. Even birthday cakes where we spell it out on the order card. I think Karolyn is just asking for more trouble.

the only names that I don't like are Casey, and Anthony.

With good reason, considering this summer's media hoopla.

My name is Emily and I work with kids, and I haven't come across nearly as many Emily's as I have Kasey/Kacy/Kacie/Casey's, Emma's, or Mia's. Carolyn and Vanessa are both very pretty and not very common. I think Vanessa Marie sounds nice.

I like Kevin, Ian, James (<3), and Thomas for boy. I think if you made it clear that you wanted him to be Thomas not Tom then it wouldn't be that big of an issue. I've known Jonathan-not-Jon's and William-not-Will's and it's not been much of a hassle as long as they introduce themselves that way.

Good luck! :)

I think out of the girl names, Vanessa goes best with Marie. It is also not super common but everyone knows the name.

For the boy, I like Kevin the best for the same reason as Vanessa. It is common but not every other boy you meet has the name.

I know a few girls with the middle name "Marie" these are their FNs if you'd like some more ideas/suggestions:

Christina (Kristina)
Ciara (Pronounced: Cee-air-a)
Casey (Kasey)

I guess the C and K sounds are popular with that name.

For boys I think the following fn/mn combos sound good together:

James Ian
Anthony Sean
Kevin James

I agree, it's nothing too crazy. In Germany you'd spell it with a K (Karolin), anyway. And your kid might just as well end up resenting you for giving it a too normal name, so go with what you think is right :>
