[identity profile] rylee900.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hey! So I'm expecting a baby in February and I was just listing some names that I like, so yeah. :)

Girls:
Belle
September
Saoirse(means freedom in Irish, which I love the idea of as well)
Lorelei
Hana( but everyone would think it was the same as Hannah/Hanna)
Marina
Innocence( but I don't think I'd call my child that)
Sunkyu
Sky or Haneul which is the Korean fir sky
Miyoung
Lunasa
Iseul
Ahra

Boys:
Liam
Ethan
Kieron
Aaron
Damien
Kyuhyun(my only problem with that is I'm sure people will think I named him after the singer :/ so)
Kris/ Kristian
Haneul

Lol ok some of these are Korean,so they're unusual looking I guess.

Of your list, I really like Saoirse, Hana and Liam. I also don't mind Belle, Marina, Miyoung, Kris, Ethan, Aaron and Damien, and I can deal with Ahra.

Some of the other names are not my style but not bad per se, but I really don't like Iseul (I feel like there's a -t missing) and Kyuhyun.

Saoirse will probably always have to spell and pronounce her name, but as someone who always has to do that - I don't think it's a big deal at all. Same goes for Kyuhyun...but I just don't like the look of that name.

Girls:
Belle - Cute.
September - LOVE.
Saoirse - I can never read this without thinking Psoriasis first.
Lorelei - Video name game to me.
Hana - Love.
Marina - Cute.
Innocence( but I don't think I'd call my child that) - Too much.
Sunkyu - Nooo.
Sky or Haneul which is the Korean fir sky - I don't like either one... in that case I'd go for the hawaiin version: Lani.
Miyoung - Nope.
Lunasa - Ick sounds like Linaza which means flax-seed in Spanish.
Iseul - Sounds very masculine to me.
Ahra - Not even sure how to pronounce it.

Boys:
Liam - Love.
Ethan - Love.
Kieron - Cute.
Aaron - Not my style but cute enough.
Damien - This has ALWAYS been a girl's name to me but I am aware I am weird for thinking that.
Kyuhyun(my only problem with that is I'm sure people will think I named him after the singer :/ so) - your other problem should be people spelling and/or saying this.
Kris/ Kristian - Not my style but cute enough.
Haneul - No.

Oh wow, in that case, I'd definitely go with Saoirse! It's such a beautiful name.

& I definitely don't mind Korean names in general; Kyuhyun is just not for me ;).

How do you pronounce Saoirse? My very limited knowledge of gaelic names tells me that it won't be anything like it's spelt lol, but other than that I'm clueless.

I really like Lorelei and Belle for a girl, or Liam and Kieron for a boy.

I think your child would have to constantly spell their name out if you pick one of the Korean names, and that would just be more of a hassle for them. I'm also not a huge fan of Innocence, because I think it would lend itself to teasing, and like other month names more than September, but that's just personal preference. I prefer January or August. I also think it's a bit odd to name her September if she's born in February, but again that's just personal.

They're almost always very pretty, but unless you live in Ireland (which I see you said you do fortunately) they're not really practical unless you and your kid want to forever be spelling them out, sadly.

I love Saoirse! I tried to convince my friend to use that name for her daughter (she wanted a traditional Irish name) but she used Róisín instead, which is another great one.

I forgot to mention, my brother is named Kieran. He got some questions about it when he was younger but I think it really suits him and is a great name. I prefer his spelling of it though (the letter O looks weird to me in that spelling of it.)

Much as I like Lorelei she was an evil siren who lured men to their deaths ... but as long as you're not planning to live in Germany (since she's a German myth) that's probably not something a lot of people know.

I don't like month names particularly.

Liam is lovely, although I prefer it as a nn to William. Ethan's another favourite of mine.

Oh and is there any particular reason you chose Kieran with a K? I notice you said you were in Ireland and the more traditional Irish spelling is with a C. Personally I prefer that to the K.

Lol well that's as good a reason as any! :)

Girls:
Belle - Cute though I'd see it more as a middle name then a first name.
September - This is lovely. Especially if the child is born in September. It would be strange for me, off putting really, to meet someone named September who was born in April.
Saoirse - This is lovely.
Lorelei - This is okay. I kind of like the name since I am a big Gilmore Girls girl.
Hana - It is okay though I would put it as a middle name.
Marina - Alright.
Innocence - Okay as a middle name.
Sunkyu - I know a Sun-Ka who is Korean. Unless the child is visibly Korean I don't think this will work.
Sky or Haneul - I like Skye/Sky but I don't like Haneul. It seems more like a boys name to be just by it's appearance.
Miyoung - Looks/sounds like "My Young" where you'd have to be pretty careful with a middle name. And perhaps creative bullies.
Lunasa - Looks to be like Lunesta. I tend to stay away from Lunar names though I do like the name "Ellune"
Iseul - As per my past comment on Haneul. It is definitely like eul part that makes it look like it should be Manuel or something.
Ahra - I think Ahra might not be the best for a first name. And looks a little weird to pronounce. My first urge was to pronounce it Ahira.

Boys:
Liam - Okay, common though.
Ethan - It is nice.
Kieron - Cute especially for the Irish trend.
Aaron - Cute enough, not overly common.
Damien - I like it. I posted it on my on list.
Kyuhyun - Looks hard to spell and say. Why not shortened version like Kyu?
Kris/ Kristian - Okay but the K bothers me in the boys category. I know a lot of Kristie's, Kristien's, etc that are female.
Haneul - Works better in the male category.

I like:

Girls:
Belle - although I like it short for Isabelle.
Lorelei
Hana - How is it different than Hannah/Hanna? Is it Hawh-na instead of Han-na?
*Sunkyu (don't like, but if the kid is in an mostly English speaking place it is very close to Sunk You)
Sky or Haneul which is the Korean for sky - love both of these
Miyoung - I like it, but again with the English words, this time Me Young.
*Lunasa - How do you pronounce this? Lune-essa, or Lune-assa?
Iseul - never heard this, but its kind of neat.

Boys:
Ethan
Kieron - I like it spelled Kieran though.
Aaron
*Kyuhyun - Don't like, but I've never heard of the singer so that wouldn't be a problem for me.
Kris/ Kristian
Haneul - this is my favorite of your boy names.

Yup I thought of Super Junior's Kyuhyun when I saw the name in the list xD

I personally think Saoirse would sound nice along with Choi.

Not too keen on Lorelei ( after the Siren myth and the rock in Germany named after her but I don't think many people would be aware of it ) , September , Innocence & Lunasa for the girls.

I like all the boys category though. If your heart leads you to the Korean names I think you should name the kid that .

Also aren't there any Korean names that can pass off as normal ish names ..I know Mi-Na or Ju-Ri are some but I don't know about others.

Yeah I mean I LOVE asian names. But it would be off putting to me to meet someone's family and be introduced to their sister and brother who had names like Kieron/Lorelie while the person I am with is named Sunkyu.

I would have to take the person aside and ask why the family didn't stick to asian first names across the board. When I think of kids names I don't only think about what first name and middle name sounds good together but how the sibling names will sound

I think that is why people tend sometimes to do alliterative names for siblings - though I don't think I could do that.

I know some girls from Taiwan/Korea who went to my university for a year they had some pretty names you might like: Kuan-Yi, Boa (went by Tina), Eun-Mi, and Soo-Jin.

That plus it looks like a combination of Choi Siwon & Kyuhyun lol.

The thing is too no one can tell how the future is gonna be :/ For example let's say they audition for SM Ent or end up falling in love with their Papa's side and end up in Korea then having the Korean name wouldn't be a hassle or if they decide to stay in Ireland then the Irish name wouldn't be bad. Though I trust you'll pick a nice one :3

Hmm isn't Hana Japanese though ?

You could do an all western first name with all asian middle name thing and visa versa. To kind of have the best of both. And later if your kids want to go by there asian name or western name they can chose one.

There is a Korean girl in my son's class named Seoreen. It sounds lovely being spoken by non-Koreans, because it sounds like serene.

Your comment about meeting someone named September born in April made me laugh. My name is April and I was born in June. I can understand why that would be off putting. It's off putting for me to be constantly asked if I was born in April.

I love Marina and Lorelei from the girls names and Ethan for the boys! They're lovely names!

Belle and Marina are nice girl names. I would discourage you from naming your child a month name especially if your child is born in a different month than his/her name. From experience, I know that your child will likely have several month nicknames and be asked if he/she was born the same month as his/her name. Just some food for thought.

Liam and Ethan are cute boy names.

Loooove Belle and Marina. Wish I could use Belle (as it reminds me of my favorite Disney princess), but it rhymes with my last name. :(

Girls:
Belle - meh as a given name, okay if a NN for Isabelle, etc.
September - hate
Saoirse - LOVE
Lorelei - okay
Hana (everyone would think it was the same as Hannah/Hanna) - that's okay, I like the name Hanna/h =)
Marina - okay
Innocence - hate
Sunkyu - "I Sunkyu battleship!"
Sky or Haneul - I'd go with Haneul over Sky
Miyoung - sounds okay
Lunasa - meh, not a fan of holiday naming
Iseul - is this a variant of Isolde? I like Isolde better...
Ahra - meh

Boys:
Liam - like
Ethan - like
Kieron - prefer more trad. spellings, i.e. Ciaran/Kieran
Aaron - like
Damien - I'm of a generation where this is an evil child's name (Google "The Omen")
Kyuhyun - sounds okay, I'm not familiar with Korean names, but fits in with the crazy Gaelic pronunciations lol
Kris/ Kristian - like, though prefer "Ch" vs. "K"
Haneul - same as under girls

=)
