I met a little girl named Isla the other day. Not so weird, really, except that she pronounced her name "iz-la" instead of "eye-la". What do you think of that?

I didn't know that's not how it was pronounced... Oops.

Having only heard it Eye-la, Iz-la is not okay, lol. I don't even know what's attractive about iz-la.

Same. Is-la is how the girl I know pronounces it, too.

My mind is blown that people say "is-la" or "iz-la" or really ANYTHING other than "eye-la."

Yikes.

This. Anything else like eye-la just sounds wrong to me.

Love the name, but the dumb pronunciation really ruins it.

Is-la/Iz-la is how you'd pronounce it if you spoke Italian, Spanish or French... it is literaly the word for Island and to people that speak romance languages the S is not silent.

Like Isla (eye-la) and have only seen/heard it used that way.

Understand Isla ie Spanish etc pronounciation but wouldn't use it as a name for my child, just think "eye-la" sounds prettier as a name.

I'd only ever heard 'EES-lah' like the Spanish for island. Didn't you watch Jurassic Park? Haha!

Yah^^ I say EES-lah and am so in love with that name. If I could talk my DH into it, I'd seriously consider having another kid, just to use the name. lol

I've never heard "eye-la". Isla (is-la) is the Spanish word for island, so...I guess I always figured that's how it was pronounced. ^^

I always wondered how to pronounce that name.

Of course, I always tend to transpose the letters and read it as "Ilsa".

I feel the same way, but the other way around. I've only heard it as Is-la. Eye-la may make sense when think if an island, but it just sounds weird to me.

Islay[Eye-la] is the name of a Scottish island. Being from Scotland myself I know a good few of Islas and they've all been pronoucned Eye-la. The only other way I'd maybe think it'd be said would be EEz-lah, ie Spanish for island. Though I'm not sure if by iz-la, that's what you mean or more of an 'ih' sound :p

I like the pronunciation "eye-la" but dislike the spelling Isla for the reasons generally mentioned. Maybe Aila?

I like it. When I first saw of the name 'Isla' I thought it was pronounced "iz-la" and I've always thought it's really pretty that way.

Yup. I'd never heard of "eye-la", just the Spanish "Ease-lah."
