What could Elle be a nn for? I love the name but I can't stand the thought of naming my child after a French pronoun (especially because I'm French.)

Any name that ends with -elle like Rochelle
Or, if you're feeling feisty, any name that starts with the letter L.

I had a friend named Elizabeth that went by Elle, because she hated both the nns Liz and Beth.

There are probably about 100 or more names that end in -elle (examples (http://www.behindthename.com/php/extra.php?terms=elle&extra=h&gender=f)), that Elle could be a nickname for. And really, any name that starts with L- (here (http://www.behindthename.com/nm/l_f.php)) or El- (towards the bottom here (http://www.behindthename.com/nm/e_f.php)) is fair game too, as far as I'm concerned.

My best friend's name is Elena (ELLE-eh-nah in italian) and I call her Elle :)
I got the idea from a girl I knew named Elettra who used to go by Elle.

I think it would be difficult for Americans to pronounce Elena ELLE-en-nah (though it makes sense to me), so an alternative could be Helena, nn Elle.

Perfect! I was just thinking that all the Elenas I know pronounce their name El-AY-nah, rather than EL-eh-na.

My middle name is Elena (after my Italian grandmother) and I can attest to Americans having difficulty with it, especially because I live in Georgia.
