[identity profile] trivher.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I used to post here and on various message boards quite a number of years, but lost interest in names and haven't posted anything for quite awhile But lately I seem to be on a name kick again. So, hi?

Anyways my husband and I do not have any kids, though we'd like some we're just not in that place in our lives. We are 99.99% set on our girl choice which is Astrid June Hicks. I know many people don't include last names in posts but unfortunately I feel as if not many names sound that good with it so I like getting the flow and feel for the entire name. :-) June was his mother's middle name, she passed away over ten years ago. Though I don't watch it I know there is a character named Astrid on the TV program Fringe and I wonder will people think I got it from there? I know as a Tabetha I constantly get asked if I was named after the daughter on Bewitched, and do I want to put a child through that?

The boy is a slightly different story. I thought we were equally set on it now further discussion over it as been started. The first name is Gideon that is set, it's the middle that is causing some trouble. For the longest time I wanted to use my dad's name (and few other relatives name) however my husband would really like the middle to be after one of his two best friends. And also a random name keeps popping up in my head when I think of the name LOL. I prefer middle names that have a personal connection and a story of why you picked it. Because of that I know the "random" name shouldn't be there but for some reason it just keeps getting stuck in my head when I think Gideon.

Here are the choices in alphabetical order. Which do you think is the best overall?

for me Gideon Christopher Hicks was a close 2nd to Gideon James Hicks

I've never watched Fringe and didn't know the connection. and unless your middle name was Endora (i actually know of a Tabitha Endora!) I can't see why people would think you were named after Bewitched

Love Astrid June Hicks! Beautiful choice. :) I don't watch tv so I'm no help on the television thing, though my sister's name is Tabitha, the Bewitched comments seemed to annoy my mom more than my sister haha. The cute thing is that she ended up with a best friend named Sabrina, so they had the television witches theme going on. :)

My favorite Gideon combos are Gideon Richard and Gideon Christopher, I couldn't decide and went with Christopher. Really, though, they're all very decent names. My only criticism is that James sounds like a filler middle name to me, much like Marie or Lynn for girls.

I've known a few Tabitha's and while I think of bewitched it isn't the first thing that comes to mind. I haven't heard of a show called Fridge?

When I think of Astrid I think of The Office.

I like both Gideon James and Gideon Christopher

I think James is best, then Christopher. I don't think Joshua or Richard flow with it at all. But I do think that naming a baby after your dad should definitely take precedence over naming him after your husband's friends! That's nice and all, but it can wait til boy #2 (if that ever happens).

I don't think most people will connect Astrid to Fringe. Back when Bewitched was on, everyone watched the same shows b/c there were only a few channels to choose from - far, far fewer people watch Fringe than ever watched Bewitched. So some people will think of it, but not most people and I doubt very many will ask about it. My name is Brandy, and I get asked occasionally if I was named after the song (I was) but not all that often. It doesn't really bother me.

The Office was what I thought of, too, even though I watch Fringe. Except I immediately thought Astird hahaha.

Same. (Astird I mean) It killed the name for me, haha.

I like the flow of Gideon Christopher the best, but I think it's pretty crappy of your husband to try and name a kid after his friends instead of your father.

Astrid June is a beautiful name!

As for your boy's name, I think Gideon James Hicks flows wonderfully.

I think Astrid June is great, and I love the name Gideon! It was a toss up, for me, between Gideon Christopher and Gideon Richard. I ended up picking Christopher, but either would be a good choice. Gideon James Hicks feels stilted to me because of the two one syllable names in a row. Gideon Joshua Hicks is a little awkward for me to say because of all of the vowels in a row --ua Hi-- I know H isn't a vowel, but it's such a soft sound that it gets a little lost in there.

I love Astrid. I'm a huge fan of Fringe and I didn't even think of it. When you think about it, there is always going to be a tv show or movie with some name you like in it some where. It's just when a name becomes a super trend like Miley after Miley Cyrus or Jonas after the Jonas Brothers, you tend to get problems then.

I voted Gideon James, but Gideon Christopher is a very close second.

I actually thought James before I saw your poll :)

Also, are you related to any Hicks in Ontario?

I don't watch Fringe, and the only person I know that does is my dad. I think you'll be pretty safe on that one.

I love Gideon James.

I love Gideon James.

For me, the absolute worst is Christopher. They just don't seem like the same kind or style of name, and just really clash, imo. However, I agree that middle names should have a family connection, so whichever one is the most meaningful to you. :)

I think a lot more people will think of How To Train Your Dragon when they see the name Astrid, I know I did.

As for the boy's name, I like Gideon James the best. (I also associate Gideon with Scott Pilgrim, so be ready for that)

Never seen Fringe, but Astrid makes me think of The Office where Michael kept calling Jan's baby Astird (Ass turd), so.
