[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/-----citylight/ posting in [community profile] babynames
Ideas for "old fashioned names?" Names like Authur & Pearl.
Boys and girls. Things you can imagine on little old ladies and wrinkled gentlemen.
Your favourites. Or least favourites. Names of grandparents names, or other older family members. Paired with middle names or not.
I'm just looking to make a good list for each gender.
Please & thank you =]

Whoops, there must have been a mistake in the bolding. Hyman, Milton, Fay, and Euginia, Clarence, Harry and Ida are the old people names

Joseph, John, William, Thomas, Helen, Clara, Henry, Paul, Fredrick, Minnie, Sophia, Lillian, and Jacob are not

Go to a bookstore or library and take a look at "The Baby Name Wizard" by Laura Wattenberg (who runs the website of the same name). There are a few lists in the back that will be helpful - Antique Charm, Biblical, Ladies and Gentlemen, and Porch Sitters especially. No need to buy the book just to flip through a couple lists, just bring a pad to write down ideas on. (Though I must say I love the whole book, way better than an average name book.)

Some that we've considered, in no particular order:

Adelaide
Zelphia (my grandma's grandma's name)
Ezekiel
Amelia
Cecilia or Cecily (my grandfather was named Cecil, but I like the female versions better)
Rose
Sadie
Elias
Ezra
Levi
Saul
Agatha
Casper
Rupert

My grandmother and her sisters were all names for gemstones. We've thought of using my grandmother's name, Opal, or one of her sister's name, Pearl, or another gemstone name.

Anyway...

* = names we like

*Opal (I like it but can't find anyone else who does; I think it's nice because it's less common)
*Pearl
Bea
Ava
Maude
Mavis
*Millicent
*Edward (nn Ward)
Henry
Albert
Harold
Edgar

Heh, can't think of a lot...
