Nick-Names

Have any of you ever given your kid a name that you liked with a common nick-name that you didn't like (or do you know anyone that has)? If the kid is old enough for you to say, how did that work out? Do they go by the name you call them by, or did little Henry become Harry as soon as he started school?

I feel like nick names come about when the individual is better suited with it. Like I am a Julie. I hate it. I'm nothing like it. People started calling me Jay. It is perfect and suits me well. There is a big part in East of Eden about this and it is worth the read.

My eldest is Lukas. I hate, hate, HATE the name Luke. He goes by Lukas or Lu, but never Luke. He's almost 11 and will not respond to Luke. I've trained him that if people try to call him that, he isn't to answer, his name is NOT Luke. =P

There are a few people who insist on continuing to call him Luke, despite his ignoring them completely when they call him that. He flat out acts as though there must be some one else in the room named Luke, because no one should ever address him by that name. It's a little awkward correcting people for the 50 millionth time....especially when it's your step-dad's parents (my MIL and FIL).

Happened to my parents. I'm a Jessica ... NOT a Jess. However, once I hit middle school (so what's that.. 6th grade.. maybe age 11 or 12?), I met new kids and this girl insisted on calling me Jess. It has stuck ever since. My mom would try to correct whenever people called for me ("Hi is Jess there?" "Oh, you mean Jessica?" "Uhh. Yeah?" "Yeah she's here. Who's calling?" type of thing) but Jess won. Only immediate family and a select other few call me Jessica now.

My bestfriend in high school was Jonathan. Not Jon. Everyone and their mother insisted on calling him Jon. He responded to both, but never addressed himself as such. I think he just got used to it.

My name is Danielle. The for my parents was to name me Danielle and call me Danie. It never stuck. Its just not me. If anyone calls me anything other than plan Danielle, 99% of the time its "Miss Danielle". I dont know why, but people have been doing it my entire life. Or Stephanie. Again, dunno.

I was just wondering about that myself, actually. Husband and I really like the name Tamsin for a girl (like actress Tamsin Grieg) but I really dislike the nickname Tammy/Tammi. So obviously we'd never use it on our child, but we can't control what our child would identify with or what other people might call her. So it might be a dicey choice but if you really love it, I'd go for it.

My brother's name is David, and my Mom was adamant that he wasn't going to be a Dave. A couple people call him that, but not many. In our family, he mostly just goes by David, or some other nickname, or we shorten his name in other ways.

I know a girl named Tamsen. I don't know that any one has ever even thought to call her Tammy/Tammi. She strictly goes by Tamsen and nothing else. I quite like the name and it suits her really well.

My family is probably a good "case study" for the nicknaming issue. I'm one of five kids-- Misty, Elizabeth (me), Amanda, Rachel, and Christopher. My parents were always adamant that we would never be Liz/Lizzy, Mandy, or Chris. Misty and Rachel she thought were safe from nicknames.

I have never responded to Liz or Lizzy. A few people have tried to call me that, but my mother trained me to hate it so I corrected them right away. Same with Amanda and Mandy. Christopher, on the other hand, totally gave up on making people call him Christopher (some of them simply WOULD NOT listen, including teachers!), so all his friends and teachers call him Chris. In the family, however, he's 100% Christopher.

So, on avoiding particularly detested nicknames, my parents are 2 for 3. Their children still ended up with nicknames, though! Instead of Liz, Mandy, and Chris, they have Baba, Mina, and Kip. And the nickname-safe Misty and Rachel? Moose and Chel.

My husband is Jacob, no one calls him Jake. His sisters and myself do sometimes call him "J".
I am Krystal- but go by "Kay".

Our oldest sons are Jack and Roman- people try to call them Jacky, Jack-Jack, Ro...and I correct them.
BUT- we named our 3rd son "August" and pretty much always call him "Gus"!

I think it is so rude when people refuse to call you by your actual name. Especially if you have corrected them. I honestly do not understand that...?

My sons name is Patrick, and I despise the nick-name Pat. He's only two, but I was very clear with my family that he is a PATRICK and not a PAT. I'm hoping it's not an issue as he gets older, but it will be up to him what he wants to be called. He will always be Patrick to me, though.

Me either! I mean, come on, Christopher is only three syllables. It can't be that hard. But I think he wasn't as zealous as the rest of us in making people call him the full name so it just didn't stick.
