Alyse (is this pronounced "Alice" or "Elise"?) [edit to add: I'm weird because I don't come across the name Elise/Elyse very often and in my head was pronouncing it uh-leese, but I don't differentiate very much between "uh" and "ah" in names.]

I wish I could remember how he worded it, because to me it sounded like a question you would normally ask someone with a name you don't hear often which would normally be responded to with it being a family name, or the ethnicity of it or whatever, but she kind of sounded pissed off that he even asked. He basically then said, "Okay, thanks for clearing that up."

Yossarian's Catch 22 isn't it? It's the main character's surname in that. I think it's Armenian.

I've seen Alyse pronounced either way. I tend to pronounce it like a cross between the two - the longer eee sound of Elise, but starting with a more pronounced A like in Alice.

Alyse is pronounced differently from both, it's more like Ah-lease. I guess it's a combination as the commenter above said. It's my grandmother's name and I always really loved it, but when trying to find the meaning it seems to be a made up name? She was born in 1940.

Haha yup. I figured it was his surname, but because he's only referred to by that, it made me wonder if it could be a first name (not necessarily his).

That was my accent coming through. I pronounce Elise as "Ah-lease". . .probably because the last person I knew with that name (a girl named Elyse) I haven't heard pronounce her name in many years, so I probably just don't remember how she pronounced and am probably pronouncing it wrong.
