From Σουσαννα (Sousanna), the Greek form of the Hebrew name שׁוֹשַׁנָּה (Shoshannah) which was derived from the Hebrew word שׁוֹשָׁן (shoshan) meaning "lily" (in modern Hebrew this also means "rose"). In the New Testament this is the name of a woman who ministered to Christ. It also occurs in the Old Testament Apocrypha as the name of a woman falsely accused of adultery. The prophet Daniel clears her name by tricking her accusers, who end up being condemned themselves.

And I was surprised to see it's Biblical, since I don't have the Apocrypha. I'd like to read that story.

It THRILLS me that in modern Hebrew the name is related to Rose, since that's my name.

My new favorite name. :) I hope my husband likes it. Not that it matters to him since we are "never" having children. LOL.

The story of Susanna was just mentioned in the book I'm reading, Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. Weird coincedence!

I love Susanna and Susan! Where do you find that book of the Bible? i could've sworn I learned in college that the Catholics had extra books, but my husband says no. Now I know I am somewhat right! This is exactly why you are supposed to name ALL of your notes, kids!

I know a little girl with this name (aged 8) and it suits her really well. It's pretty, and it meets my criteria of an ideal name (i.e. everyone has heard of it, but not many people have it)

The story of Susanna and the elders is in the Book of Daniel, but you will have to find a Catholic version if you want to read it. The story is apocryphal in the Jewish and Protestant versions and I can't remember if I've seen it in a Protestant Bible.

It was a popular subject for Renaissance paintings, as it allowed the patron to enjoy a completely nude female figure while still purportedly ascribing to a moral, with the added bonus of demonizing Jews. Apart from that, I really like the name - I like it more for its Puritan usage than its Biblical (or extrabiblical) connotations, though.
