I've just decided that I really like the name Nell. WDYT? Do you think that it can be a name on its own, or must it be short for something? Could you call a daughter Nell and avoid Nellie?

I think it can be used on it's own or as a nickname for Eleanor/Ellen etc
You can avoid Nellie if you tell people not to call her that and if she chooses not to go by that when she's older ;)

I like it best on it's own.

I think you can avoid Nellie if she doesn't tell people to call her that and doesn't respond to it, but you don't know. SHE could end up preferring Nellie, so you never know.

I think it's cute but I think it would depend a lot on how it flowed with your last name.

My son, Lukas, never answers to Luke. =) He is 10 and completely oblivious when people try and call him anything besides Lukas. So I think it's totally possible to train your child to not answer to it and to train others to NOT call her that. If they try it, just smile and say you prefer her given name.

Nell is a lovely nickname. I'd say Eleanor or Cornelia.

I love Nell, on its own or as a nickname.

I think Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton's daughter is Nell.

I like it! If I met someone named Nell, I would definitely assume it was short for something. I've mostly heard it as a short form of Helen or Penelope, but I like the idea of Eleanor a lot more.

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton's daughter is named Nell. ^^
I kind of like it on its own, only because I don't really like any of the names it can be derived from.

You tell people not to call her Nellie... When she gets older, it will be up to her. =)

There's a little girl at my church named Nell. I'm not sure if it's short for anything or not, but I've never heard anyone call her Nellie, so apparently it can be done.
