Thanks! Although so far, Elspeth seems to be generating some confusion among the friends we've told -- but our daughter's name is Ezra, so we're pretty used to repeating ourselves... :)
Oh, they're both gorgeous names! I really like Elspeth, and I always said I wanted to use it for a middle, even though it's not normally something I would like! Dove is cute. Josiah is nice, also, and I really like Birch, too!
My husband has what he'd consider a "too different" name, so I use him as a good barometer for what a kid can (and should) take.
That said, I'm sure different people have very different experiences, but naming is always a gamble. I hated my super-popular super-80's name (Heather) for most of my life, and would have done anything to be named Summer or Sabrina when I was in grade school.
My point of reference for a "different" name might also be different than yours; I consider Josiah and Elspeth quite conventional, and I think there's a lot more leeway for unusual names when they're middles.
