One of my favourite shows when I was a kid was "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". It occurred to me today that so many of the characters have names that I really love. What do you think? Bolding my favourites.

Michaela, nn Mike
Matthew
Colleen
Brian
Charlotte
Byron
Loren
Jake
Horace
Hank
Timothy
Robert
Grace
Ingrid
Olive
Dorothy
Myra
Preston
Andrew

Michaela, in particular, has really become one of my favourite names, but I don't love the nickname Mike. What other nicknames can you think of?

Also: I'm trying to come up with a bunch of names that contain meanings related to different emotions. I have quite a few that mean happy/joyful/etc., but (not surprisingly) there aren't a lot with negative meanings (sad/angry/afraid/lonely/jealous/etc). Can you think of any? Or maybe names that sound like these words in other languages?

I think there are quite a few names with negative meanings, but the name sources tend to whitewash them.

You could start with Jacob.

I used to watch that show with my parents, but much like Doogie Howser and The Wonder Years, I didn't really understand the plots or anything. For example, I just now found out via Wikipedia that Sully's first name was Byron.
I like:
Matthew
Charlotte
Ingrid
Andrew

I kind of like Charlotte. Brian, Andrew, and Jake are okay.

I think Dolores means sorrows.

Some "negative" names:

Mara--bitter
Huso(m)--sadness of the bride
Heath--wasteland
Mallory--unlucky
Niobe--mythological figure whose children were killed as punishment for her arrogance
Lola/Lolita--sorrows
Deirdre--brokenhearted, sorrowful
Monica--solitary

Reagan--descendant of Riagan, a Gael who was furious and impulsive

Hmm, maybe I should reconsider my love of the name Odessa!

I really loved the name Michaela because of that show, but it's been completely ruined for me by all the Makayla, McKayla, etc. incarnations that have become so damn trendy.

I never would have thought of Mike as a nickname for Michaela! Yet now it seems so obvious...

I remember that show!

(Okay probably stretching it, but the combo of Matthew and Colleen reminds me of AoGG).

I like:
Matthew
Colleen
Brian
Charlotte
Jake
Grace
Myra (for a character name, not so much for a real name)
Andrew

As for other possible nicknames, off the top of my head: Mickey, Mick, Ella, Kay, Kayla. All of these come with the disclaimrer of "or some spelling there of". and yeah, I probably got a little silly with these.
