[identity profile] googlebee-ohmi.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Today while I was at the doctors office I heard a few names that I thought that I would share:

twins: Sage (m) and Marigold
Joy
Twain (m)
Charlotte
Calla (like the calla lily)

I love the name Charlotte - I think it is so classic and pretty and I do not think it is heard enough!  Twain is a little out there for me and I really do not think of Sage as a boys name.

WDYT?

I feel like I should dislike Sage and Marigold as a set because it's so themey, but I find myself liking it. I think Sage is fine for a boy. Marigold is sort of a guilty pleasure.

For some reason, all I can think of when I hear Twain is "never the twain shall meet." I'm guessing the name is actually for Mark Twain though or is a family name.

I love Charlotte.

I think Marigold is lovely and unexpected -- but I think Sage is pretty unfortunate, especially on a boy.

Joy is okay, but I prefer Simcha. I like Charlotte. Calla is sweet, but sounds like a nickname. Twain is a little "eh" to me, but maybe if I were a bigger Twain fan? It also has the weird usage of something being cut "in twain"... hm.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] how_obscure in that Marigold and Sage are way too theme-y. I like Sage for a boy, and Marigold is a guilty pleasure for me as well. It reminds me of Magnolia which is the name of my kitty!

I dislike Joy and Twain, especially Twain.

I like Charlotte. Calla would make for a nice nickname for Callista/Calista, but I don't like it as a full name.

Charlotte is pretty, and it's old-fashioned enough now that it's out of style and any child (though I know you didn't specify it was a child) called Charlotte will likely be the only one in her school, which is always nice. It's not one of my favorite names, but if it was important to my SO that our daughter had this name (to honor a loved one or something) I wouldn't mind.

I like Sage. I know it's a little 'trendy' but it's not so trendy that there's going to be five others in the class and it doesn't have a ridiculous meaning. It wouldn't be my first choice for a son (and it would be very low on the list for a daughter) but if my SO really wanted it, I'd probably give in without much argument. (And I totally think of Sage as a boys name way more than a girls name, for the record.)

Calla and Marigold I really don't like. They're just too unusual for me. Marigold is slightly redeemed by the fact that they can always just use Mary as a nick-name, but over-all I just don't care for these two, and I would have significant reservations about naming a child either of them.

I would never name a child "Joy." It sets everyone she'll encounter up with a convenient way of derailing the discussion anytime she's upset, it'll be ridiculous if she ever goes goth. It'll be cute when things are good, but I think it would be really annoying to have sign "Joy" on student loans, divorce papers, eventually a death certificate, and other unpleasant things.

Twain reminds me first of a mispronunciation of "train" and second of Mark Twain, neither of which I would particularly want to name a child after.

I kind of like Charlotte.
I hate Joy and Twain.
I tend to think of Sage as a boys name first. For the longest time, I'd only seen it on boys; it's only now (during the past few years) that I'm seeing it everywhere on girls.

Charlotte enjoyed a huge resurgence in the UK and Europe a few years ago - it's become almost over-used there.

I really don't like the name Charlotte, at all.

Sage is cute though, as is Joy!

Charlotte is in my Top 3! I adore that name, I don't even care if it's getting popular. I don't go crazy worrying about popularity; I was often Elizabeth B. in my classes, and sure it was annoying sometimes, but I survived it just fine. I even felt like I was in a kind of sisterhood with the other Elizabeths at school. I wouldn't want something as hideously overused as Jennifer or Jessica, but I don't feel like Charlotte's reached that level.

I like Sage on a boy. Marigold... well, it's too "out there" for my taste, but it could grow on me. Joy is an okay name, but it seems a little dated to me, like a middle-aged lady. Not really a fan of Twain or Calla, but they're not repulsive or anything.

I love Sage on boys. Marigold might almost be a guilty pleasure, but with Sage, way too matchy for my taste.
