[personal profile] sal_amanda posting in [community profile] babynames
My daughter's name is Eleanor and we call her Nora.  We're waiting to adopt domestically right now so we don't know if we'll be having a boy or a girl.  We're hoping to be able to find a middle name that will have some significance for where this child comes from, but we're trying to get settled on first names, and it's girls' names that I keep toying with.  It's mostly my decision because my husband picked Nora's name (his grandmother's name is Eleanor, but she goes by Ellie), but I do want him to be okay with it.  He's mostly mellow and neutral about things like this so when I do get a reaction from him, I try to keep it in mind.

I most like Beatrice with a nickname of Bea, and that's likely what I'll go with.  I also liked Charlotte nearly equally as much, but I keep seeing it too much.  It's not off the table completely, but it's moving down the list.  I posted the other day about liking Loretta with a nickname of Etta, but my husband has a strong enough negative view of it that I probably won't push it much.  And this community has gotten me liking Freya lately, and surprisingly, when I mentioned it to my husband, he actually liked it.  I really didn't think he would.

Here's my question.  Since we already call our daughter Nora, would it be too similar a sound to have Etta or Freya?  Just because of them all being two syllables with "a" on the end.

And actually, since my husband hates Loretta, but I like the idea of Etta, what are other Etta names you can think of?

Thanks!

Henrietta is the only one that comes to mind for me.

I think Beatrice/Bea complements Eleanor/Nora really well.
I'm not a fan of Freya, but I like Etta and think it's works as a stand alone name. I think Etta and Nora go ok together, but I prefer Bea.

I kind of think Charlotte lends itself to Etta. It's a bit of a stretch, but I can see it working.

I have an ancestor called Pernetta. I'm guessing that's not what you're going for, though. :) I think Beatrice and Eleanor are great sibling names. I love both those names. I also like the spelling Beatrix.

I think Nora and Etta are fine together. The only thing they have in common is the "ah" at the end. If you were thinking Laura and Nora I would say no, they rhyme.

Hahahaha okay I have to tell you this super important personal anecdote:

My name is Eleanor, and my sister's name is Gabrielle. No matter how many times my dad and grandma told my great aunt that her name was Gabrielle, she wrote 'Dear Beatrice' in every single card she ever sent her. In group cards she'd be all 'Dear [my mum], [my dad], Eleanor, and Beatrice'.

So I think you could be onto something with Eleanor and Beatrice.

Etta James was born Jamesetta. Though that's not really the best name out there, lol. Juliette or Julietta. Harriet. I think Etta is just a name on its own, most of the time.
