[identity profile] polly-purebred.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Today I saw a baby named Nemesis. The last name was hispanic so maybe the parents didn't know the definition of the word? Either way, it's still awful.

I think once before someone met a woman with a child called Nemesis. I really don't think those people now what it means, and simply think it sounds pretty!

Poor kid.

Just so you know me and my sister read this and found it highly insulting. We're both Hispanic and uh... just so you know the root of Nemesis is grecolatin which means that is closest to our language than English and not only that but *most* Latins are raised with a Catholic belief system (most latin-american countries are considered Catholic Nations) so the word Nemesis would be part of something that they do know. So yeah them having a hispanic last name has nothing to do with knowing the meaning of the word Nemesis that we use on an everyday basis.

So thanks for that whole bit about the last name... I assure you I know more of your language than you probably do and my last name is VERY hispanic.

Am I overreacting? well seeing as everyone in my household was insulted maybe not...

Yeah, a little.

I get that you're displeased and want to display it, but insulting them directly is not how to go about it. Dial it down.

how did I insult them directly? and sorry I guess it's alright for her to insult hispanics but not okay for me to direct an 'insult' at HER. Sounds good, in that case I digress. But for the record, it's really not nice to judge on hispanic/greek/anglosaxon/chinese sounding anything and I guess it takes being on the other side to know just how rotten that feels.

I'm Australian, with no Hispanic blood and I find the original post offensive.

Actually, I'm half Portuguese, from my father's side. I had an EXTREMELY Portuguese last name. No, generalizations aren't proper, but please spare me your victimization and seriously, dial it down. You're not helping your cause by implying a lack of intelligence on her part.

Love it. Love it, it's gorgeous, I would definitely use it. The Greek goddess of revenge/retribution, what's not to love? It's awesome. And yeah, maybe all people with Hispanic last names don't know common English words . Maybe they know what it actually means, and liked it. I know, and I just added it to my list a couple days ago.

there is no victimization truth be told I never pulled the 'hispanics always have it such shitty!' no... we all do but implying that someone doesn't KNOW because they are hispanic is plain simple rude and border lining something else. It was an unintelligent comment. That's like saying 'oh they were black! so I guess they probably didn't know any better'

I get what you're trying to say, totally do but it WAS unintelligent on her part and I called her on it. Or actually said I PROBABLY do know the language better. Why? Cause I study it for a living and also teach it? But like if I know if there is some doctorate in English behind the poster but that was just dumb of her. So if she is allowed to believe and post that this person named their kid Nemesis because they didn't know any better I guess I'm allowed to do so too. I wasn't even truly being insulting to be honest... not like I called her an ignorant racist bitch (which I WOULD have no right to do since I don't think she is, I think she was generalizing which is a kind of dumb thing to do... don't you think?). But seeing as you insist Imma let it go now, the internetville has many like this.

Peace and btw Nemesis is kind of cool if you do look past the meaning... like.. Thanatos.

Thanks. And for the record, I don't disagree with you (take note, OP), it shouldn't have been said and I'm glad someone pointed that out. I just hated to see the message degraded by the the little language/smarts jab, that's all.

Well, as a noun, it's "nemesi" in italian, so it can't be that far in spanish.
