Jun. 8th, 2010 08:11 amThe New York Times has a section called "Complaint Box" and a month ago a complaint was filed about kr8tyve spellings.
"I saw a birth announcement the other day and groaned. In recent years, I’d learned to accept the flood of trendy tots named Madison, but this was my first Madicyn. If you care about spelling, my advice is to pour yourself a stiff drink before untying that pink or blue ribbon and reading news of the blessed event."
The illustration is hilarious and there's a separate section on the website where people are commenting on the same phenomenon.
Here are the jewels i saw as i scanned:
Caryl (Carol)
Goodluck
Mars Millennium Falcon Starcruiser

Date: 2010-06-08 01:38 pm (UTC)I was told this when I was pregnant, and I think it’s a good rule of thumb. When choosing a name for your child, test it two ways:
“And now, the President of the United States, (insert child’s name here)”
“And up next, at the Eager Beaver Gentleman’s Club/ State Correctional Facility Amateur Rodeo, (insert name here)”
You want a name that fits better with the first statement than with the second.
I've heard the first part (with SCOTUS judges) but the second is important.
#15 is priceless:
A woman in my online mom’s group named her daughter Wrigley, because she and her husband were big Cubs fans. I wanted to ask her if she would have picked Comiskey if they’d been White Sox fans. Somehow, I don’t think she would have thought it was funny.

Date: 2010-06-08 05:32 pm (UTC)I agree with what some of the commenters on that page said: there's a difference between unusual or uncommon names, and grossly misspelled "creative" names. I love the former, but hate the latter.
For example, I think Lavender, Róisín and Otis are amazing, whereas Makynzee, Kaitelynne and Kassaundrah are not.
