I went to a mom's group today at my local hospital, and I was the first person to show up (it was my first time at this group). When the first lady showed up, I introduced myself and my daughter and she introduced herself. Her said her name was Michelle, she was 27 years old, and she has one daughter who she brought to the group, named Amanda.

I found this really refreshing for some reason and complimented her on how I liked the name and that you don't hear the name Amanda too much anymore, especially in this age group (the baby was 4 months old).

Later on, Michelle was talking to the group leader and at some point it was noted that Amanda's name is actually spelled Amandah.

I was really sad to catch that part of the conversation. Ugh. :-(

I'm not a huge fan of Amanda due to personal associations with the name, but I totally agree with you on the spelling.
It's almost like she named her kid "a man, duh"

The H is stupid. That poor girl will forever be saying "Amanda...with an h" and then people are going to go "say whu?"

For having such a simple name her mother has made her life forever that much harder.

I actually know a baby a little less than a year old named Amanda
but, it always reminds me of a girl I went to high school with who was really masculine and everyone used to refer to her as a man, duh
so, that's what I automatically associate with the name

I say there's a good reason why we don't hear the name Amanda much anymore. And there's an even better reason why nobody should ever use that spelling, if they do name a kid that.

I don't think Amandah is that bad. The 'h' is super unnecessary, yes, and it kind of ruins the aesthetics of the name (with the three A thing) but it could've been so much worse! Amanda is not my style, but a good name.

my name is Amanda & i think it's a beautiful name.
the only thing is, it's a lot like Brittany & Madison today..it was totally over-used in the 80s. and ppl have bad associations with the name cos chances are they knew a girl in school who was a total bitch named Amanda.

I'm an Amanda, my wife's name is Amanda and I know at LEAST 5 other Amandas. While it may be refreshing on a younger baby, for my age group [mid-20s], it's one of the most popular names I can think of. And masculine or not, EVERY SINGLE AMANDA I HAVE EVER MET has gone through the "A man, DUH!" teasing. So maybe the H doesn't matter in that respect. I really don't like my name because it's so common, but I'd dislike it worse if it had a random and unnecessary H tacked onto the end.

I never knew an Amanda, but other than that, that is was I meant: it was definitely over-used, and in the 80s, so I think it's rather dated to use on a kid now. Plus, it's not my style.

I'm an Amanda, and I've never really felt one way or the other about my name (except to wish that it were a little less common in the eighties), but I can say that I heartily disapprove of adding an H.

Amanda is the one name that I hate the very most of all names, even stupid made up names. I have terrible personal associations with it and I would rather name my daughter Raynbeau Skiidansir Eunikorn than Amanda.

That being said, adding an unnecessary twist to a classic, plain name is almost always silly, in my opinion.

I absolutely love the name Amanda, but then again, I'm from Norway and it was never over-used there so I don't have the whole "dated"-association with it. In fact, Amanda is my #1 name for a girl and it has been since I was about 14. (I do think we say it a bit prettier in Norway too :P)

However, the h is so unnecessary and really annoying. Poor kid having to tell people there's an h in her name. Why can't people just stick to the normal spelling? Makes me sad :(
