Does anyone else have names that they can never use/take seriously because of what the they mean in other languages?

ie. Isla It means island in Spanish. It's kind of a pretty name, but especially when I see it with a middle name, for instance, Isla Rachel or something, my brain goes, "Rachel Island, wtf?!"

I can't take Mira seriously, either. Mira Emily - You watch Emily. Kinda creepy actually. (Forgive me if I remembered incorrectly what that verb ending translates to. It's been almost ten years since I stopped taking Spanish classes. My biggest memory of leaning this verb though is watching a terrible 80's movie with a man sitting on a couch watching a turned off T.V. while a mechanical voice said "Mira la television," over and over again. Rest assured that someone is indeed watching Emily though.)

Also, unrelated to the rest of the post,

Aurelia May was born on 4-11! Thanks for giving me input on her name way back in September!

Actually no, I've never thought about that, but then again...I don't think the names I like translate into anything.

Aurelia May, that's a great name! And a beautiful baby too. Congrats!

It's something that crosses my mind, and sometimes leads to slight amusement on my part, but I probably wouldn't reconsider a name I really liked because of it, unless I felt the child would be having a lot of contact with people who spoke that language.

Aurelia May is a beauiful choice! Congratulations on your new addition.

It's not another language, but I can't stand the name Melena because of what it means. Thankfully, it is not a very popular name.

congrats!

When I went to Guatemala with my friend Mona, our host family kept shooting us sidelong glances. (Mona = female monkey in Spanish).

Aurelia is absolutely beautiful and I love her name.

Our town is about 40% Spanish-speaking, and our neighborhood elementary school is 80% Spanish-speaking, so I definitely think about how names will be pronounced or perceived in Spanish. Love the name you chose for your baby, by the way. Aurelia is gorgeous.

aww look-it her! -has a complete cuteness-attack- :D she's adorable!

as far as the name thing goes, i kinda go with the whole "i wouldn't reconsider it unless i know that the kid's going to have a lot of contact with people who speak that language" thing... as far as isla goes i've never been very interested in "nature" names anyway, so if someone can be named river, willow, viloet, rose, etc, then someone can be named island, imho :)

I was just thinking I could never name a kid of mine Chloe because Klo in German is a colloquialism meaning toilet/bathroom.

I only think about what they translate among the languages I speak because half my family is French and the other half is Italian. Fortunately most the names I like don't mean something horrendous in the other language. It doesn't usually bother me, however.

Aw, Aurelia May is such a pretty name and she's a cutie :)

About the names: every time I see a person named 'Kip' I have to laugh out loud. 'Kip' means 'chicken' in Dutch, which is my native tongue ;-)

I think about it often because my family is Hispanic. I once had a coworker named Rana who I always felt bad for. They pronounced her name Rey-nah, like queen, but she spelled it like frog. lol Another coworker's name was Tarada (Tuh-rey-dah) but in spanish, the way it is spelled means idiot/fool.

Another problem is now that my BF and I are actively TTC, we've come across tons of names that sound wonderful in English, but will get completely chopped up in Spanish, and vice versa. We recently named our dog Elliot and my dad kept calling him Eh-lee-en, which sounded a lot like Alien. lol We switched his name to Chase. ;) I've also have always loved the name Montserrat, but my boyfriend can't say it to save his life. lol So that's the end of that!
