May. 19th, 2010 11:25 amDoes anyone else have names that they can never use/take seriously because of what the they mean in other languages?
ie. Isla It means island in Spanish. It's kind of a pretty name, but especially when I see it with a middle name, for instance, Isla Rachel or something, my brain goes, "Rachel Island, wtf?!"
I can't take Mira seriously, either. Mira Emily - You watch Emily. Kinda creepy actually. (Forgive me if I remembered incorrectly what that verb ending translates to. It's been almost ten years since I stopped taking Spanish classes. My biggest memory of leaning this verb though is watching a terrible 80's movie with a man sitting on a couch watching a turned off T.V. while a mechanical voice said "Mira la television," over and over again. Rest assured that someone is indeed watching Emily though.)
Also, unrelated to the rest of the post,
Aurelia May was born on 4-11! Thanks for giving me input on her name way back in September!

Date: 2010-05-19 05:31 pm (UTC)as far as the name thing goes, i kinda go with the whole "i wouldn't reconsider it unless i know that the kid's going to have a lot of contact with people who speak that language" thing... as far as isla goes i've never been very interested in "nature" names anyway, so if someone can be named river, willow, viloet, rose, etc, then someone can be named island, imho :)

Date: 2010-05-25 05:02 am (UTC)Another problem is now that my BF and I are actively TTC, we've come across tons of names that sound wonderful in English, but will get completely chopped up in Spanish, and vice versa. We recently named our dog Elliot and my dad kept calling him Eh-lee-en, which sounded a lot like Alien. lol We switched his name to Chase. ;) I've also have always loved the name Montserrat, but my boyfriend can't say it to save his life. lol So that's the end of that!
