So I went to class with woman named Elke.  Said like Elk with an e on as she put it.  WDYT?

uhm. no. where i live elk are like community dogs. while they get hunted during hunting season there are a few that will eat out of your hand. so basically if you're gonna name one kid elke, might as well name one dog(e).

Just makes me think of Alky/Alchy, like an alcoholic.

Like Elk-ee? The only time I've heard this, she pronounced it El-keh, which I definitely prefer, but I really don't like either.

It's quite common here. We pronounce it like El-keh, though. Or more like El-que.

It is quite common in Germany, where it would be pronounced El-keh. Not one of my favorite names, but not too bad.

El-kee is bad.

I used to work with an Elke, pronounced the same way.

I like it the way it's pronounced in Germany.

To me, it's bad no matter how it's pronounced. XP

my cousin's wife's name is Elka and I always thought it was pretty. Her sister, however is oddly enough named Ursula (I'm assuming before the disney movie..but still)

I work with a woman named Elskien... her nickname is Elke (El-kee)

I like it. It's a name from her family heritage (Polish maybe? I can't remember)

I think it's pretty :)

There is an old actress named Elke. Sommer I think is her last name. I like it, but I have only ever known it on a dog.

Me too, I think it's a pretty good name.

Sounds like a non-English name that would sound better in the country where it's from -- like the French girl's name "Biche" (pronounced "Beesh"), which unfortunately is MADE FOR TEASING in the US.
