Mar. 28th, 2010 06:25 pmMy husband and I are trying to have a baby, so we talk about possible baby names often. I have a list of my favorites. Let me know what you think!
For a Girl:
Regina
Margot
Lane
Ramona
Josie
Marlene (mine and my mom's middle name)
Alexa
Mary (my sister's name)
For a Boy:
Wesley
Milo
Emmett
Neal (my dad's name)
David (his dad's name)
Middle names:
Lane (b/g)
Marlene (g)
Logan (b)
Elaine (g)
Notes:
-We both agree on Margot, and I'm beginning to love it. I know some people won't like this name and a few idiots will actually pronounce the "T" but I'm hoping most people are familiar with it.
-Would you pronounce the name Josie like JOE-C or JOE-Z?
-Ramona is one of my all-time favorites, but everybody I know totally hates it. :(

Date: 2010-03-28 10:27 pm (UTC)Margot Elaine sounds awesome! You could use Ramona as the middle name. Margot Ramona sounds pretty nice.
I guess it comes out more as Joe Z.

Date: 2010-03-28 10:38 pm (UTC)For boys, my favorite is Milo.
Lane works well as a middle name.

Date: 2010-03-28 10:41 pm (UTC)I think Margot Elaine sounds great, and Emmett Lane. David Lane brings to mind David Blaine, which is...not good.
And I pronounce it "joe-c."

Date: 2010-03-29 12:31 am (UTC)I would definitely keep up the Marlene middle name for a girl, my mom and I have the same middle name too!
I would probably pronounce it Joe-zee, but I've definitely heard it both ways and may not be consistent if it wasn't specified.
I remember when I was little and didn't know about the silent "t" while reading the name Margot. Adults should know how to pronounce it, and kids would most likely hear the name before seeing it anyway.
Thinking about it, I think I like Margot best of your lot. I like Alexa but I would definitely name her Alexandra and call her Alexa.
Ramona reminds me of the Beverly Cleary books, which is a pro for me. I love books.
On the down side, Josie reminds me of Josie Pye from the Anne of Green Gables books who was not very likable. This is probably not a common problem though.
I love Elaine for a middle name.

Date: 2010-03-29 02:41 am (UTC)- I like the sound of Margot, and I think it's popular enough now; that's my second favourite spelling, so it's nice.
- JOE-Z
- I love Ramona. It's only a middle name on my list, but I think it's cute and sort of quirky.
For the girls, I like them all except Josie and Marlene. I like Wesley the most out of the boys, but Milo and Emmett are good too. I like Lane, but I'm biased, since my middle is Layne. I will say this, I haven't found it to be quite common, but nobody I knows can remember it. They either think it's Lynn, Elizabeth or Elaine.

Josie as a nickname for Josephine
Ramona
Mary
Milo
Emmett
Neal
I don't like:
Regina
Marlene
Alexa
Wesley
David
I like middle names:
Logan (b)
Elaine (g)
Margot is my favorite of your girl names, but I also really like Ramona. I would use it if it wasn't alliterative with our last name. I'd pronounce Josie like Joe-Z.

Date: 2010-03-29 06:27 am (UTC)Dislike Regina, Margot, Josie, Marlene, Mary, Neal, Logan, and Elaine.
Alexa is okay, and I'm indifferent to Wesley and Emmett.
Ramona... I used to -really- hate the way this name sounds, but I'm mostly indifferent to it now. Makes me think of the Beverly Cleary character. =)
I like saying Margot with the "T," just to f*ck around, lol. ;)
I pronounce Josie like Joe-C.

Date: 2010-03-29 06:51 pm (UTC)Regina-- elegant, but a little musty. Not my style, but not awful.
Margot-- I prefer it without the T, but whatever. It's both friendly and classy, that's a rare combo.
Lane-- not awful, but just so... blah. Like a placeholder.
Ramona-- I have always liked this name. I don't even know if it deserves it, but I love it.
Josie--excellent nickname. Doesn't stand too well on its own.
Ack, sorry, gotta go, I'll finish later.

Date: 2010-03-29 07:28 pm (UTC)Marlene (mine and my mom's middle name)--ugh ugh ugh ugh I cannot say ugh too many times to this name. Since it's a family name, I can forgive it as a middle, but please PLEASE not a first.
Alexa-- the whole Alex family of names has been woefully overdone, but aside from that, they are good names, and Alexa is probably one of the less popular variants.
Mary (my sister's name)--at this point, Mary is not just a name, it is a statement. It says either you really are that vanilla, or you're being ironic. I don't think either path is a good one when you're naming a child. The name itself is nice enough, but... like I said. A statement.
For a Boy:
Wesley-- I really love this name. It's a good balance of familiar and uncommon, too.
Milo-- Considerably quirkier than Wesley... very cute but hard to see on an adult.
Emmett-- Like Wesley only stronger and more hay-scented. (Which isn't a bad thing, in my book.)
Neal (my dad's name)-- White Collar is the only reason I can stand this name. It would make a good middle, but as a first, it screams 60s to me.
David (his dad's name)-- Classic! Less boring than John, but just as respectable. This is on my short list, mostly because it's a family name, but I like it on its own merits.
Middle names:
Lane (b/g)-- works for either gender. A little bland but could be worse. Keep in mind a lot of your names have prominent L's; Ramona Lane sounds a lot better than Marlene Lane or Alexa Lane, ditto Emmett vs. Wesley or Neal.
Marlene (g)-- as previously mentioned, only because it's a family name could I ever forgive this!
Logan (b)-- a good solid name. See above warning on subject of L's.
Elaine (g)-- Just as dated as Marlene, but not as ugly.
-Would you pronounce the name Josie like JOE-C or JOE-Z?
I lean toward Joe-C but I would follow whatever the person herself said, probably without even realizing it.

Date: 2010-03-30 12:59 am (UTC)Wesley and Emmett are nice.
I could see using Neal, David, or Marlene as middle names because they are family names. David would be okay as a first too, I suppose, but the other two I really don't like. Sorry.
I really like Lane for a boy and Elaine is quite nice too.

Date: 2010-03-30 05:34 am (UTC)Margot- Personally, I hate this name. Visually, every time I see it my mind goes to "maggot"
Lane- I'm on the fence about this one. It's a nice name, but I think it feels more like a boy's name to me.
Ramona- I love this name, I have ever since I read the Ramona Quimby books.
Josie- I like it as a nickname, but not as a name on it's own.
Marlene- Very cute
Alexa- Love it
Mary- Neutral on this one.
For a Boy:
Wesley- I dislike this name for personal reasons. It's an okay name, but it has bad connotations for me.
Milo- This is a dog name, IMO
Emmett- I like it, but prefer the spelling Emmitt
Neal- Not too bad. I can take it or leave it.
David- By far my favorite of your boy names.
