[identity profile] chesterismyhero.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A girl I went to high school with just had a baby last week.

His name is Rohan. Pronounced Row-ehn, not Row-han (as she pointed out on her FB).

WTF? Why not name him Rowen then!?!

And since I'm posting, I've been pulling transcripts for a project and here is a list of a few names I've come across:

Micheryl
Cavin
Aaunterria
Breylaya
Cherrelle and Dannielle (twins)
Kiayana
Doneesha and Loneesha (twins)
Shevelle
Trance

I do not get the "looks like one name, sounds like another" strategy. It only makes sense if there is a language thing going on (like my friend Jan, named by his German mom, pronounced "yahn"). There is the most egregious case in my husband's family, which I know I have mentioned before. A little Kailani, prounced Kay-lynn. All the Is are silent I guess!

That makes no sense. That's like naming your kid Eilyizaibiethi and saying 'Elizabeth. All the 'i's are silent!'

It just...makes no sense!

I know of someone who did the same thing. I was all stoked seeing Rohan since I'm a Lord of the Rings geek, and then she said it was pronounced Rowan. The kid is about 5 I think.

It could be after Rohan (Row-hahn), as in Lord of the Rings.

I actually don't mind it, but it's probably because I'm a total geek. I prefer Ronan to all of these names, however.

EDIT: Read the post better, and that's a shame. It's like... kr8ive fail. They should have googled Rohan before naming their kid that.

That's just going to cause trouble. In LotR Rohan is row-hahn. So yeah. But still a nice name... Rowan or Rohan.
