Frustrated, two names of my very small list of boy names I actually like have just been used:
Elliott (used by- friend from high school)
Liam (used by- hubby's best friend's sister)

ugh.

I don't think either of those is a reason to not use those names, TBH. If it was YOUR sister or your husband's sister, maybe, but best friend? Nah. And unless that friend from high school is your best friend now or someone you're still really close with, I don't think that would matter.

For me the person would have to be a close friend or relative before I'd not use the same name. Maybe a best friend or my own sister, but not the degree of separation you mentioned (unless you're still close with the friend from high school).

I agree with the first poster that it's not really a reason to not use those names...

Plus, Elliot isn't the most popular or trendy name, but it's definitely around. And Liam is like in the top 10 most popular names so I would expect to see A LOT more of that.

Aw. See Riley used to be my top girl name ... then one of my friend's named her daughter Riley. That alone wasn't enough to dissuade me, but then when my boyfriend's brother named his son Riley I knew I couldn't use it. Especially because girl/boy Riley cousins would be annoying.

That said, Elliott is one of my absolute favorites! I sort of grew out of Liam, but that was also on top.

Two of my cousins ended up using the same name for their kids, and it hasn't been a big deal. Everyone seems to like it actually cause it's fun comparing "little ____" and "big _____." So in those instances, I wouldn't sweat it. If you love it, use it.

I hate that!! My cousin used one of our girl names (Emery) and a friend of mine used another (Eden). Ugh.

those are incredibly popular right now so I am not surprised. I liek them both since I tend to like traditional names.
