I love Christian beyond anything. Hoping to name one of my boys that (this current baby will be Harrison or Sophia).

And my husband REAAAALLY liked Ashton. Until I told him I'd want to use it on a girl. And now he doesn't like it :/

Ma'Shyla - sounds like someone who doesn't understand African culture much thinking they've found something cool. In Africa, particularly from about the tropic of Capricorn North, when a woman has her first child the communal mode of address for her changes. So for example, if your daughter's name was Jane, the mother would now be referred to as Ma'Jane (it works better with African names, promise ;)). It's a respect thing - culturally in Africa a woman who has given birth is considered to have contributed to society in a special and important way, and the name-change is recognition of this (let's not go into loss of identity and personal identity being submerged in the motherhood role, etc!)

Anyway, yes - I think someone came across that and got it backwards.

I pity kids with these names living in the majority English-speaking West - research indicates that names with odd spellings and unusual apostrophes tend to be associated with a ghetto/poorer background by most people (unless the child has famous parents) and leads to discrimination - a kid with a name like Cher'Tonia is supposedly less likely to get a job when up against a kid with a more traditional English name. (Came across all this research when a friend's daughter decided to name her child Summer yet spell it "Summa"...)
