Edited to add a few things:
Visited an old aunt of my dad's today who told us that her newest great grandkid was born on Christmas Eve, a little girl named Rosita. The big brother is named Matheo.
Also, saw a news article about these top names of 2009, and this one guy stated in the discussion forum that because people choose biblical names, they must be a lot more religious than they claim to be. I don't agree with this. I myself is an atheist, but most of the names I like are from the bible. I only know they're from the bible because I'm interested in names, seeing as I've never actually read the bible. I was just wondering what you guys think. Do you think when you choose a biblical name for your child that you have to be religious?

I don't think you have to be religious to use a Biblical name. Some Biblical names have been in such common usage for so long that they don't even seem that Biblical, like Thomas. I think that for people who are religious, Biblical names just have a bit more/different meaning. I'm religious, and while I don't specifically choose Biblical names for my children, a nice Biblical reference is an added bonus.

& No, I agree with you, actually. Of course I can't speak for everyone, but for me personally, the main reason for choosing a name is because it appeals to me aesthetically. I imagine that most people similarly find Noah & Isaac (to name just two) very pretty while they're not religious at all.

I don't agree with that guy at all. I know there are quite a few people who choose names because of religious connotations, but I can like Mary and not be religious. I do, and I'm not. Same with Levi, Eli, Samuel...I think that's it for me.

Date: 2010-01-27 10:22 pm (UTC)don't think you have to be religious to use a religious name- but that being said, if you're going to name your child Jezebel or Mephibosheth or something more obscurely religious, you should maybe think about the connotations of that name as well as prepare yourself for any negativity/ strange comments that are bound to come out.

I don't really think that being religious is a prerequisite for liking biblical names. If a name is biblical it's a bonus for me since I'm Christian, but there are so many names that are just standard/common that people don't think twice about where they come from. My friend and her brother are Mary and David, and her family isn't religious. I suppose it'd be a bit weird to me if an atheist named their kid, say, Mehetabel or Abednego, but if I met a family with Joshua, Sarah, and Ethan, I wouldn't assume they were religious.
