Why silly? It's historical. It's just like any of the -er profession last names turned first names. I'm not sure I like it, but I don't find it silly.

Booker T. Washington comes to mind first. Also, a cartoon I used to watch as a kid, "Garfield and Friends," had a character named Booker. He was a feisty little yellow chick that was always trying to catch worms, but couldn't ever get them. He was named by the pig character (Orson), for Orson's love of books.

i kind of like it. i don't think i'd use it myself, but i think i'd be happy to meet someone with the name. it's interesting, but still legitimate. :)
