eh... 50/50 I like it in theory but then I think of names like Diamond and then I just... eh... but it's not bad I just think gemstone names need to be used very... precisely... don't know how much sense that makes though xD
ITA. The Amy nickname is a good alternative if she ended up being a more mainstream kind of girl. Amethyst is a nice word on paper but I'm not sure it rolls off the tongue. I don't automatically hate it. The meaning ("not drunk") cracks me up though! The stone itself is beautiful and I wouldn't mind being named after it. And I like Amethyst (as a name) better than Sapphire or Diamond.
I like it in theory, as in I don't really have a problem with stone names, because I love Ruby. Maybe Amethyst as a middle name. Maybe. It's just really not my style at all.
I think gem names are bit over-the-top. I love Jade and Ruby, because they're short and simple, but more complex ones don't work as well, imo. Amethyst could get by, I guess, because it's rather svelt to pronounce.
But it's not considered a precious stone, it's a kind of quartz, so rather common. It's not as expensive as, say, ruby or emerald.
There are certainly worse stone names. Diamond is blech, Ruby is pretty, Pearl is okay but way too dated. I've never thought of it as a name but Amethyst isn't bad, it's kind of pretty without being too out there or stupid:)
I don't know .. I think it COULD work .. I would LIKE to use it, because amethysts are my gemstone and I think they're pretty :)
I don't like how the word 'meth' is in the middle, however, and idk.. I think it COULD be pulled off, yes, but .. eh, I don't know how to explain myself :p
Hm, it's a little out-there for my personal taste, but I like it. It sounds pretty, looks pretty, it's unusual but not made-up, and the amethyst is a beautiful stone. And she could go by Ammie or Amy if Amethyst got to be too much of a mouthful. If you feel strongly about it, I would say go for it.
