1. How do you feel about the name Alice spelled the original way: Alys?

2. Do you think most people would just think its a Kre8tive spelling on the part of the parents?

3. Do you think Alys goes with a twin sister Maya? Feel free to suggest other siblings for Alys or Maya.

4. And from my Aunt: Is Freya and Maya to close for twin sisters? How about Leila and Maya?

Beatiful names! I love Maya and Leila. I also love Alys. However, I think that you would constantly have to be telling people "it's a-l-y-s, not a-l-i-c-e" which is probably why I wouldn't use it.

1. I prefer Alice
2. Yep, really does look Kre8ive
3. I like Alice and Maya
4. Freya and Maya too matchy, twins don't need to have matchy names. Leila and Maya could work.

1. if it has to be "the roots", then I'd go with Alyx

2. With Alys, yes.

3. Sound-wise, they're distant enough, but visually the same only vowel is a bit too much for me.

4. Freya and Maya, definitely. Leila and Maya only is you're pronouncing it May-ah and not My-ah.

Having known an actual Alys throughout school it's the normal spelling to me now.. I actually would probably use Alys instead of Alice, I think it makes a big difference if you've been exposed to it with the original spelling and not been over exposed to other creative spellings! Creative spellings have never been popular in my area so far so.. I think she told everyone it was the Welsh version or something and everyone accepted it as a valid different way to spell Alice.

Also I think it makes a difference that 'Alys' has a 'Y' in it.. which seems to be in a lot of 'creative' names to replace an 'i' these days.. so I can see how it would be quickly be judged as a creative spelling.

I didn't even know that was the original version. Since I know go to school with an Alyse (ah-lease), if I had seen Alys, I think I would have been more inclined to say it like Alyse, not Alice.

I'm not a fan of Maya, Freya, or Leila so I'm no use there really.

I prefer Alice and unfortunately, Alys does look a little kr8ive but if it's legit, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think Alys and Maya are too "y" heavy but Alice and Maya look pretty nice together.

I LOVE Freya but I think both Freya and Maya and Leila and Maya sound too matchy.

1. I think the Alys spelling looks trendy/modern to most people's eyes. I would use Alice, which is a very old name itself.

2. Yeah, I think most people would assume it's creative unless the parents had some connection with the Welsh language or with medieval history (or it was a family name). If that is the case then I think spelling it Alys would be in context and make sense.

3. Alice and Maya sound fine together but they seem like different naming styles. To my ears Alice sounds more traditional and old fashioned, Maya sounds more free-spirited and modern/global. I would expect sibsets more like: Alice and Matilda, Alice and Beatrix, Alice and Eleanor, Alice and Louise, Maya and Nina, Maya and Lena, Maya and Maren.

4. Maya and Freya are a little bit matchy to my taste. I don't mind that they both end in A, but they both end in -ya and that's a rather unusual phoneme so it stands out. Leila and Maya doesn't have the same issue for my ears.

Part of me likes Alys because my best friend from high school's name is Alyson. but if I were to use the name, I would definitely spell it Alice, because I'm a huge Alice in Wonderland fan. :P

1. Prefer Alice.
2. Yes.
3. I don't care for this combo, since the styles seem very different: Alice, traditional/classic; Maya, modern.
4. Freya/Maya is kind of matchy and I don't like Freya, but I much prefer this combo to Leila/Maya.

1. I prefer Alice
2. I think people would probably assume that it was the parents trying to be 'creative' rather than a legit spelling
3. Alice and Maya seem fine together, although Alice is a little more classic and Maya is a little more modern. They are different naming styles, but it's not completely off.
4. Freya and Maya are too close, but I prefer it to Leila and Maya

1. egads, I really don't like it much spelled that way. I LOVE Alice, though
2. Yes
3. I love Maya. Alice (spelled that way) and Maya are fine together
4. Freya and Maya are a bit similar. Maya and Leila are fine.

3. Sure.
4. I think Freya and Maya are too close. I do love Leila and Maya, though.

Completely agree.

Alys and Maya look ok to me as a set, but sound like totally different names and completely different naming styles. Ideas I kind of like with Maya: Briony, Fiona, Serphina, Acadia, Penelope, Caliope, Juno.

Not knowing that Alys is the original spelling before reading this post if I saw it irl I would think it looked silly and was a creative spelling of Alice.

I like Alys and Maya sounds really good together.
Freya and Maya is too much I think. They're too similar.
Leila and Maya is really pretty.

I love the name Alice ... I also like Alais which I believe is an old French version of Alice ... I knew a girl named Alys but she was called Uh-lease

I'm probably the only person who likes 'Alys' moreso than 'Alice'. I also don't think it looks like a creative attempt at Alice either, haha.

I think Alys and Maya are beautiful. Whilst Freya is also a lovely name, it doesn't have the same sort of appeal. I just think it should stick to the Norse myths.

1. Alice is the original English spelling. Alys is the Welsh variant. It's definitely a legitimate spelling.

2. Most people would think it was a kre8tive spelling, but they'd be wrong, so I wouldn't care too much.

3. I don't think Alys goes very well with Maya, but it's not terrible.

4. I think Freya is too rhymey to use with Maya. Leila would be really nice, though.

2. Yes. Well, maybe not most, but anybody who doesn't know origins of names and stuff might.
3. Yes
4. Freya and Maya are too close, in my opinion. Leila and Maya are as well.

I'm not a fan of Alice at all, but Alys looks quite lovely. I do think a lot of people might assume it was a creative spelling, but I wouldn't rule out a name because of that. If anyone questions it, they could be told.

Just looking at it, honestly, I would have thought it was related to Alyssa, and probably would have guessed the pronunciation as uh-LISS, instead of AL-iss, but one correction is all it would take. As for worrying about misspellings, I don't think that's a huge deal, either, because I have spent my entire life spelling my popular, standard-spelling name for people, who STILL manage to misspell it (or call me by the wrong name).

Freya and Maya do sound a little too similar for twins, in my opinion, although Alys/Maya and Leila/Maya sound great together.

I have to disagree a bit on that one. Maya, to me, isn't a global name in an old-fashioned/literary/historical way, though I know the name itself is thousands of years old. Maya is global in a trendy way; I picture siblings named Nevada, Zahara, Eli, Levi, etc... names that instead of bringing of the world in the context of universities and libraries, makes a person think of the history via the great outdoors.

1/2) I like Alys quite a bit, but you would probably get a lot of, "Al-ees?" And people thinking that it's just some kind of kr8tyv spelling.
3) Yes, Alys/Alice and Maya sound way cute together!
4) I don't like the name Freya much, but it's not bad with Maya. Leila and Maya are nice.
