hey- Maybe someone on here can clear this up for me. I met an older lady who has two sons named Ira and Asa. I'm having a tough time with these LOL. I really dislike both. I've seen Asa before, and always on boys???. It just dosn't seem like a boys name, although I would not like it for a girl, either. and Ira I've never heard of. Anyone?

They're both legit male names. I don't hear Ira a ton on young kids, it's a bit of an 'older' name to me. I know someone who's about 20 named Asa, but it's also pretty uncommon. I do see where Asa seems a little more feminine, but I like it on boys just fine.

I've heard of Ira...I believe it's a more Jewish name?? Never heard of Asa, though, and have no idea how to pronounce it. Anyone?

AY-suh is how everyone I know with that name pronounces it, if that makes any sense. It's definitely not AH-suh.

I've heard both names quite a few times, and all only on males.

Ira seems like it would definitely fit more with someone in their 40s, yeah.

That is much better than the As-uh/Az-uh/Ass-uh that was going through my head, LOL.

Haha, most definitely. I know that the person named Asa that I know has been called Ass-uh quite a bit. Yuck.

definitely.
Before I met my husband, I honestly had no idea that Loren was a guys' name... but lo and behold, my husband has two close, male friends named Loren. It was a totally new concept to me. :P I had only ever known Lauren as a girls' name, and Loren as an alternate spelling.

I've definitely heard of both, and I think both have Hebrew origins. Sadly, my only experience with Asa was through TV. My mother watched ABC's soap operas all the time when I was young, and one of the characters on All My Children, One Life to Live, or General Hospital (I forget which) was Asa. I might consider Ira for a middle name. Asa, not so much.

I've met an Asa about my age, so in his 40s.

Ira always reminds me of Ira Glass - so that's a big sexy nerd thing going on right there.

I really like both those names. I think they make a good sib set too.

Ira is actually in my top boy names. I love it.

I find it strange you've heard of Asa and not Ira. I've heard of both but never actually heard Asa used on an actual. Ira's a standard name, I've known 3 people named Ira, and I believe there was a character on the old sitcom Mad About You named Ira. I don't like either, but Ira is definitely the more normal of the two.

::sigh:: I love Ira. Isn't there a kids book, "Ira sleeps over"?

He is SO ADORABLE. I'm glad he got over the "no pictures" thing.

They're both male names. I like both of them, especially Ira!

The first 'Ira' I knew was Eira and she was a girl so I've always found Ira a little feminine but I also always knew it was a male Jewish name - just not a boy's name I'd ever use.

I actually like Asa (and think Ace is a cute nickname) but I think you need to be a certain type of guy to pull it off. I think it's one of those names that would either suit a person really well or not suit them at all.

I've heard and seen both of them before, and only ever on boys. I wouldn't use them, but they are relatively common, standard male names.

I've heard of them, but only on really old men.

They're old Jewish man names. I'm Jewish and I grew up surrounded by Jews and I've never met anyone with those names aside from elderly men.

Same with me. I know two guys named Loren, one male Lauren, and a zillion female Laurens.
