[identity profile] heatherpantss.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

My sister is about 3 months pregnant, and I got really excited when I found out and made a list of all boys and girls names that ended in Y. (because her son's name ends in y and so does her BF's two kids.) Well, with the exception of terrible ones like Stanley. My sister and I are closer than you can prolly imagine, so I am helping her with a lot of this. So I showed her the list, and she only liked one from each sex:

Rosaley
&
Brody

(She doesn't even really know much about Twilight so she may change her mind about that later on.)

Brody is okay. It sounds very frat boy, which turns me off to the name.
I don't like that spelling of Rosalie.

I really don't like Rosaley spelled that way. I LOVE Rosalie though.

And Brody is ok.

I like Brody, I actually know a kid named Brody, so it doesn't seem all that weird to me now, though it did at first.

There's something kind of... off about Rosaley though, I think I prefer Rosalie, but it sounds pretty!

That spelling of Rosalie looks weird/off.
I don't really like either name.

oh I did, but you know see my comment where it says that's not how you spell Rosaly? yeah? no? or how about how it's just me not feeling it... You asked for opinions and you got one...

and omg you're right... Rosaley makes it SOOO much better. Okay no, it doesn't. Sorry.

omg did you not read? Rosalie is the correct spelling, Rosaley and Rosaly are not... sticking a Y in it doesn't make it any better over taking an i out. I speak fluent English as a first language...

and like I said, I simply gave you my honest opinion, I don't like the name misspelled and it surprises me that you vetoed Stanly out over them. Basically, don't spell the kid's name with a Y just because... it makes the parents look silly and the kid having to do the whole "Rosalie, with a Y not an I" which is just silly. There are plenty of girl names ending in Y originally. I didn't sugar coat, no because I thought that people could take people disagreeing without sugar coating, if you can't then... well sorry but if you hadn't been all ZOMGOFFENDED then I wouldn't have to point it out like I did. Of course, you're entitled to though, being offended at my opinion that is but then don't feel bad when I write back.

Is it pronounced Rose-alie? When I see it spelled that way I want to say it Roz-alie. Maybe she would be fine with the name ending in the y sound even if it's not spelled with a y.

I sort of get that frat boy feeling about Brody, too, but it's not a bad name. It's more of a personal association type thing. If I didn't have that personal association, I'd probably like the name.

I, too prefer Rosalie

I do have to agree that Stanley is horrible, but that's just for personal reasons.

I can definitely see frat boy in Brody, but it was the guy from Mallrats so I don't hate it.

Naming or not naming a child because of a book/movie that happens to be popular, especially when the name is of a minor character (I'm in the middle of the second book and even I didn't pick up on it at first), is just silly. If it gives you inspiration for a name, okay, but to be like, oh, no because of the book, that's stupid, in 20 years people aren't going to be like "oh, from that book/movie series, right?"

However, the spelling is absolutely horrible. You want them to all end in Ys *eye roll* okay, whatever, but like others have said, pick something that actually ends in Y. Especially since all I see is Rose-a-lay. You're butchering a beautiful name.

Other then that, close as you may be, this is your sister and her BFs kid and they will pick whatever name they both agree on. My husband and his little sister are very close and love each other very much and we've picked a name she absolutely hates and neither of us could really care less. So just keep that in mind and don't get hurt when you're names aren't picked.

Brody screams nineties to me. I get the fratboy thing, too, but it sounds more dated than anything else.

And Rosaley, spelt like that, is awful. Go with Rosalie or don't go at all. It has the same sound, after all.

You posted on a public forum, kid. Not everyone is going to be gushing over misspelled names.

Rosaley is a sort of confusing spelling. I'm not sure if it is rahz-a-lee, rohsa-lee, ross-a-lee, roh-sal-ee or what. When you stray from the traditional spelling of a name, pronunciation becomes questionable. It isn't the most visually appealing spelling, but it isn't the worst and I do understand the why of it.

Brody reminds me of 'grody.' Not such a good thing. :\

Stanley has actually been growing on me lately, but that's mostly because of a character (who doesn't go by his first name because he hates it (ha!)). Anyway, I've seen it a few times recently on birth announcement lists here so other people are liking it these days too. I don't think it's fair to exclude names from a list of "every" name ending in Y, but then, I don't know your sister's tastes as you presumably do. I just think it would be more helpful to see as many options as possible. My two cents on that point.

Love Brody, also like the name Rosalie, but spelt like that, not Rosaley, which would take it out of your choices.

I'm not a huge fan of Rosalie, and misspelling it just makes it horrible to me.

Brody seems trendy and very... WASP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Anglo-Saxon_Protestant)y.

I quite like Stanley, actually.
