How do you pronounce Astrid ?
Is it really as bad as I'm imagining it..?

In Italy it would be AH-streed, but I'm thinking Ass-something in English? XD

Aah-strid. That's the best way I can think of to write it out phonetically. I sort of like the name but not sure I'd ever use it.

It's not quite "ass" in English (not to me, at least - I'm from the northeast)...more like aaah-strid, with a soft i.

The "aaah" part is a bit hard to spell phonetically. It's not "ahhh" like when a doctor checks your throat, more like "aaaah, I'm scared!" hahaha

For me it's basically Ass-trid, but you say it together quickly so it loses part of the ASS sound so it's not that horrible.

Isn't that the name of the girl from the book White Orchids? I believe that's how they pronounced her name in the movie.

PS - the "ass" part of the name sounds more like "as" when the name is said aloud, though. It kind of blends together. When you say it slowly, the way you would when trying to pronounce it, though, it comes out the bad way, though.

it's not so much ass-trid as it is as-strid, if that makes sense. it's more of an str sound than just the s. i don't think it sounds like ASS anything when i say it or when i hear other people say it. i don't think it's bad at all, i think if you hear ASS something you're looking too far into it.

I say it more like 'as' than 'ass' (less drawn out). As-strid. Either way, as or ass, I like the American pronunciation much more than the Italian one.

i also prefer the american pronunciation. imo unless you're living in italy, everyone will pronounce it the american way and you'll seem pretentious if you try to correct them and make them pronounce it the italian way.

If you were to pronounce it the American way, it would be Ass-trid.

If you were to pronounce it the German way, it's Ah-Strid. We got to rename ourselves a German name in my German class, and I remember there was an Astrid.

Basically as everyone is saying, it's kind of like Ass-trid, but I see the A vowel as kind of separate from the whole other syllable. So it's like A-strid, but that doesn't look right phonetically, because I don't mean it to sound like the letter "A".

It is pronounced more like Ass-trid, but it's not so pronounced that people giggle at it. The "As" is said quicker than "ass." Less emphasis. I find it to be a lovely name, actually.
