the name Stephen totally bugs me to read, because you can't tell if its supposed to sound like Steven, or Stefan, i know quite a few people with the name "Stephen" but i know a couple with each pronunciation... so how do you guys say it when you read it, if you don't know the person and how it is supposed to sound.

I usually think it's pronounced like Steven, like Stephen King, but I met a guy the other day who pronounced it like Stefan, so I have no idea. I guess I generally assume it's Steven unless told otherwise.

I really like the name Stefan, but not Steven.

My least favorite cousin of all time is named Stephen but it's supposed to be Stef-EN. Except he never corrects anybody and even his parents pronounce it Stee-ven. Personally I hate the name anyway you look at it.

I say Steven. I do hate that spelling. But I hate it anyway you spell it. Steven, stephen, Steve...it's a creepy sounding, dorky, live at home til you're 40, internet porn sounding name to me. hate hate hate.

stephen = steven to me.

my coworker's name is stephen and he was telling me recently he wishes his parents had gone with the V spelling because people always pronounce it stefan, and i was like what the hell kind of idiot thinks stephen = stefan? but i guess there are people out there, lol. i figured parents would just spell it stefan to avoid confusion. i consider them different names entirely, it would never even cross my mind.

This name drives me crazy, too. I think most people say Stee-van (a name I hate) unless told otherwise, but my mind ALWAYS automatically reads it as Stefan (a name I like). I always have to correct myself. XP

I don't like the spelling. I had a boyfriend named Stefan and they were ALWAYS spelling it Stephan. And I was always like, wtf, it's not even the same name!

I have never heard or seen a Stef-an spelled with a ph, I assumed people didn't know Stef-an was a name and were messing it up.

I would have never thought to pronounce Stephen any other way than STEE-phen or maybe STEE-ven. The spelling Stephen (as in, the Christian saint) pre-dates Steven.

Like Steven. However, every Stephen I've ever met always goes by "Steve" so this problem is almost always avoided.

To me, Stephen is pronounced just like Steven, whereas Stefan is pronounced differently.

I've never heard anyone who pronounced Stephen any way other than Steven. I would expect other pronunciations to be spelled Stefan or Steffan.

It's my S/O's middle name and he prns it like Steven. If I see it written down, well, I would probably ask the person.

this, I think it's the e/a difference that determines the long e+v/short e+f pronunciation

I would always pronounce it like Steven, unless told otherwise. I don't even see how you would get the Stefan pronunciation. If it was spelt Stephan, fair enough, but not Stephen. Although I suppose you could pronounce it like Steffen, I've just never met anyone who does.

I only think Steven. I've never seen Stephen and heard somebody say Stefan.

I usually think of it as Steven because it's my close friend's brother's name and he pronounces it this way.
