[identity profile] julia-michelle.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I think my taste in names is going through an evolution. I'm finding I don't have the same feeling towards a lot of my long-time favourites, and I'm starting to be drawn towards totally different styles of names.

Not entirely unusual I'm sure, I know it's happened to me at least once before, post high school.

Either way, what do you think of the following:

Boys
Joshua
Jude
Luke
Samuel
Logan
Zachary
Parker
Tristan
Nathan
Leo (I can't for the life of me think of a full form for Leo that I like, but I LOVE the nickname).

Girls
Lillian
Violet
Alice
Ramona
Naomi
Phoebe
Fern
Tabitha

Also, do you have a name that you LOVE but would never be considered a favourite due to it's atrocious meaning? For example, I've always loved Claudia but the meaning (disabled or lame) kind of ruins it for me.

This DID however work in my favour when the Fiance told me he really liked the name Kennedy for a girl. I tried to tell him just how awful an idea that is, but it's the fact that it means deformed head or some such nonsense that finally convinced him.

Joshua--I like it, although I really don't like the nickname Josh
Jude--I hate this for some reason
Luke--I like it a lot
Samuel--This is a family name for me and I like it but probably won't use it
Logan--I don't like it
Zachary--I prefer Zachariah but I like Zachary too
Parker--I don't hate it as much as a lot of people seem to but I'm not a huge fan
Tristan--I really don't like it
Nathan--I'm pretty neutral
Leo--I don't think this needs to be a nickname necessarily. I think it's fine just as Leo, and I really like it

Lillian--I like it
Violet--I used to like it until my boyfriend said he kept misreading it as 'violent' and that kind of put me off of it
Alice--I like it
Ramona--I don't like it, but I don't hate it
Naomi--Very pretty
Phoebe--Really dislike
Fern--I like
Tabitha--I used to dislike it but it's definitely growing on me

I have a similar problem with Claudia, actually.

Zachary - neutral, not my style
Parker - trendy for now, I think, I don't really like it
Tristan - like a lot
Nathan - prefer Nathaniel, Nathan sounds 80s to me.

Lillian - hate
Violet - love
Alice - hate
Ramona - love
Naomi - almost neutral, more on the side of liking it. It's pretty.
Phoebe - hate

I don't even know the meanings of (probably more than) half the names on my list, so I've never had a problem like that. The meanings aren't important to me, the names are.

Mallory is one of those names for me!
I love the sound, but it comes from the french "malheureux" which means unhappy :/

Boys
Joshua = Love it
Jude = don't care for it
Luke = I like Lucas better
Samuel = like it
Logan = GP for me
Zachary = Love it
Parker = hate it, I dislike all -er names, to me Parker is "he who parks"
Tristan = it means "sad" !
Nathan = nope
Leo (I can't for the life of me think of a full form for Leo that I like, but I LOVE the nickname) = I feel the same!

Girls
Lillian = NMS and a bit dull, but I don't mind it. I think I prefer Lilian
Violet = too syrupy for me
Alice = Love it!
Ramona = not bad, I used to know one
Naomi = I liked it better in the past, but it's a cool name
Phoebe = growing popular! Friends association for me
Fern = I love that the ferning pattern is what you can see through a microscope when watching saliva or cervical mucus during a woman's fertile time! I'm a FAM nerd
Tabitha = I like it more in the written form, then when I say it it's kinda meh!

Just FYI,

Leo *is* a full name! :) In fact it's what we are naming our baby. It is the Roman form of Leon (which is Greek), and has quite a long history. In fact on my journal I've just started posting short biographies of other famous Leos, so far including St. Leo of Catania and the Nemean Lion, and am planning on writing about Leo Tolstoy next. While it can be short for something else, it's a very old and distinguished name just on its own.

Joshua -- I don't mind it, but I have a bit of a bad association with it.
Jude -- love it.
Luke -- love it when used as a nn for Lucas, but not as a full name.
Samuel -- this is *almost* my name, so I'm slightly biased when I say I like it :P
Logan -- I don't mind it
Zachary -- don't like
Parker -- I used to like it...now it seems a bit...pretentious, maybe?
Tristan -- love it.
Nathan -- love this one, too.
Leo -- I don't hate it...

Lillian -- this seems really old-ladyish to me.
Violet -- love it.
Alice -- don't love it, don't hate it.
Ramona -- eww. hate it.
Naomi -- it's pretty, but I'm not a huge fan.
Phoebe -- I think of Phoebe off Friends every time I hear it, so that would probably be an association you'd have to deal with.
Fern -- not my style, really.
Tabitha -- I used to HATE this name, but I like it now due to a wonderful person I know named Tabitha.

My cousin named her daughter Kennedy... she's 7 years old now and I still kind of cringe just thinking about the name.

I like all of the boy names except for Parker and Logan. Mainly because I know too many people with Parker as a last name (making it hard for me to see it as a first) and Logan because I live in Boston and can only think of the airport :[

My friend's name is Leo, short for Leoncio. However, he's always Leo.

As for the girls.. I like Lillian, but none of the others. Probably because I'm the pickiest girl name person ever.

according to my baby name books, Kennedy means "Helmeted Chief" - nothing about a deformity.

I have a similar problem with Claudia, I love the name but the meaning sucks. Same thing with Cameron (crooked nose), and Cecil/Cecilia (blind) though I'm not crazy about those names anyway
