Today I encountered a child named Precious Anjel.

Seriously. They didn't even spell Angel correctly.

Why do people do this?

i work in social services and it has been my experience that they may not have known how to spell angel.

i worked with a lady whos daughter was danual. like, danielle. but she said when she named her she sounded it out cause she didnt know how to spell it...

Well, they tend to not really "get" phonics either... The more I think about it, the more this really explains some of the weirder names I've encountered...
