[identity profile] familyrodriguez.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I don't know if anyone here will recognize me, my husband and I were debating (almost endlessly) about what to name our daughter due in the fall. First we were pretty well set on Ada, then we changed our minds to Edith. Here I am again, still considering other names. Remember her name will be _______ Samantha Jane Rodriguez.

Laila? (Lay-luh)
What do you think, what spelling do you prefer?

Some others I like:

Saria (prn. Maria with an S)
Lily (or almost any variant of Lily)
Amelia
Adelina
Mieko (I love this name but feel like it would be strange to use because of how oriental it is)
Delia/Delilah
Jules
Gemma

I'll cut my list there for now,... We're open to suggestions. Thanks!

I think Laila is nice but I think I prefer it spelled Layla just for ease of pronunciation.

Saria--Nice, but not my style
Lily--I think this is such a pretty name but unfortunately it is growing increasingly popular
Amelia--Also pretty, but I feel like I hear it a lot
Adelina--I think it's really pretty and goes with your last name well
Mieko--It's a gorgeous name, and I don't think you necessarily need an Asian background but it might make a little more sense if you had one
Delia/Delilah--I definitely prefer Delilah, I think it's lovely. I don't like Delia very much.
Jules--This is a nickname to me, it would be so cute as a nickname for Julia, Juliet, Juliana etc.
Gemma--Very pretty

I think that going for a shorter first name since you have a longer middle name might work well. I think that Lily Samantha Jane, Layla Samantha Jane, and Gemma Samantha Jane all sound pretty nice. Adelina also sounds nice with the last name, but I don't know if it flows as nicely with the middle names.

I hate Laila.
To go well with the middle names, I don't like any of them. They don't sound right with Samantha Jane. I guess Adelina and Laila are okay with the middle names. Well, Adelina sounds quite nice the more I say it. Adelina wins my vote.

Just a comment on Mieko

I'm as caucasian as they come (I've done some geneology, and other than one Navajo great great grandmother on my dad's side, I'm English, Swedish, Irish, German, Austrian, French, Welsh, and there's more, but you get the idea), and my name's Mariko...which is, like Mieko, Japanese. I occasionally get "you don't look Japanese," but most of the time when people comment it's either "did I say that right?" or "that's a pretty name."

Leila should be spelt Leila, but out of your choices, I love Gemma.

I looooove Laila. I like Leila or Laila the best. Layla looks too trendy to me, and I think Leila/Laila fits best with the style of names you seem to like.

Hehe. Don't worry about it. It's a big decision. I like Laila. I'm more familiar with Leila. Layla is just lazy.

I like the others too, except Gemma. It's not my bag.

I don't like the name Layla, but...spelling-wise, I'd say go with Layla or Leila. Laila will always be Lye-la to me. ^^;

my daughter's name is Laila actually and while I love it even more having a child with the name- it can be mispronounced as Lila and also usually misspelled and she's only 3- so maybe (although I love this spelling best) you may want to go with Layla since that's how people will spell it anyway
I also like Delilah

If you want the "lay-luh" pronunciation, go with Layla or Leila. I read "Laila" as "lie-luh".

yes! i think laila is great! i would spell it leila to flow with the last name. leila rodriguez.

saria is *very nice pronounced that way but would people get it or say sah-ri-uhh?
don't like lily, it's kind of common and won't grow up well
don't like amelia but do like amelie
don't like adelina, meiko, delia/delilah, jules or gemma

Because Samantha ends in the 'uh' sound, using a first name that also ends in the same sound like Laila, doesn't sound right to me, but maybe that's just me.

And while I don't mind the other names, I don't think they flow well with the rest.

Meiko is nice that it's different, just would be concerned about the pronunciation problem people would have with it.

Other suggestions:
Bethany
Consuelo (nn Connie?)
Jillian
Juliette (nn Jules?)
Madelyn
Rozalyn
