What nickname possibilities can you come up with for Persephone?  I feel like it's a bit of a mouthful to use as is, and would only consider it if there was a really great nickname.

What do you think of it in general?

I generally tend to fall back on Penelope since it's a *bit* more pedestrian, but I really do prefer Persephone.  Plus the part of me that's a Firefly geek doesn't want to let it go ;)

I know someone who has a daughter named Persephone, and they call her Sephie. I think Persephone is perfectly usable. I don't love it, but I don't dislike it either. Other nicknames could be Persy, Perry, or Effie (I LOVE Effie... wouldn't use it as a nn for Persephone, but it could work).

Peri or Effie would definitely work.

I don't personally like the name and can't think of any nicknames that are actually good. The first two that come to mind are awful...Seffy and Persey (like..purse-e) lmao..like I said, awful!
You could always do the whole name your kid one thing but call it by its middle name.

All I could think of was 'Seph'. I do really like the name Persephone :) (much more now I know that isn't not pronounced Per-se-fone lol)

I love Persephone, but the only NNs I can think of have already said "Persy" and "Seph/y"

I don't have any nickname ideas that haven't already been given, but I think the name in general is pretty.

I LOVE Persephone, but my husband probably wouldn't let me use it lol. I would use Persie as a nickname.

I love that name. One of those that I don't think I'll ever use but I still really like it.

They've already been said but I like the nicknames Seph/ie/y, or Effie

I've known a few little girls with the nickname Effie- very cute, very Greek :)

Cora is apparently an "official" nickname for Persephone. Kore is the Greek word for girl or maiden or something and it's a traditional reference to the Persephone story.

I love Persephone! Love love love. I didn't know there was a Firefly character; that's pretty interesting. I've loved it since I was little and poring over Greek Mythology books (I was a weird kid)... and then the Matrix movies came out and put a damper on it. Slightly.

I like the nickname Pera (Peh-ruh). I know it's not as directly derived, but it's my favorite I've come up with.

I'd read this book in which a Persephone was nicknamed Sophie...

FIREFLY?! *SQUEE* I'm sorry. I get all fangirly whenever I see someone mention it in a non-FF comm. ^^

I've loved Persephone for YEARS, before I even discovered Firefly. Of course, the connection is an added bonus. ;) I, too, have struggled with the nickname thing. I didn't care for Persi, but it has grown on me. I think that's the case with that spelling because it's so close to Parsi. Anyway, Sephie is okay, but it feels insubstantial, you know? Funny, since it's so close to Sophie. If the person who said Cora is a legit nickname is right, well, I'd go with that. Maybe. I love that name as well. Of course, you do loose any direct sound-connection to Persephone and it seems a shame that the name wouldn't be used. Oni? Per-SEPH? Hm... Why is this name so difficult? :\

Persy, like Percy? I don't like Penelope much at all, but I love Persephone.

Eh. If you're nerdy (lit, mythology, or otherwise) at all, no. Honestly, regardless, I think no. Nicknames come from all over the place, including appearances and behaviors which have nothing to do with the name you pick. And, maybe it'll inspire a little inquisitiveness about reading or other cultures or creative thinking, and all of those are very good things.

Ooh. That's a good one. I think there have been some good creative solutions in this thread.

Pera
Perry (or Peri, maybe leading to Peridot, then to Dot or Dottie. These things happen.)
Sophie
Effie (actually a nickname for Euphemia)
Cora

I did a little more googling and found some other suggestions:

Posie (so maybe Poppy, too, or Pepper, or Peppie)
Rennie (or maybe Renny or Wren)
Serpina
Or, and maybe this is a stretch, Pom(me) or Garnet after the associated fruit.
