I have only heard the name Mateo last week for the first time. What do you guys think of it?

It's pronounced mah-TAY-oh for anyone who isn't sure.

I think both spellings are common. In fact, I have seen Mateo more often than Matteo. I'll ask my friend Matthew who went to Mexico and studied and was called Mateo how they spelled it. I'm pretty sure it was with one 't' though.

Yes, I know. Which is why I am surprised that I like it as I really don't like Matthew at all. We have a Spanish surname so I think it might go well.

I really don't like the name Matt/Matty/Matthew but LOVE Mateo, it's weird.

I agree with the other person who responded to this. I found it in a baby naming book and it was spelt with one T. I have since looked it up on like and have found it lots of other places spelt with one T and only a few with the double T. I prefer way T as the double makes me want to pronounce it MATT-ay-oh which is incorrect.

Yes, that is what my mum said, that he would be nicknamed Matt. That is the biggest downfall for the name for me. My cousin who I rather dislike is called Matty, I think that is where my dislike for the name stemmed from.

I think it's pretty nice, but it's very common for babies around here - or rather, Matteo (with two T's) is, as that's the Italian form.

I think it depends on the culture of origin. My nephew (who is half Mexican) is named Mateo and the Italian foreign exchange student I went to high school with is Matteo.

this is what I was going to say. My younger brother's given name is Matthew but we call him Teo because of Mateo (it's a stretch but our whole family speaks Spanish and it just stuck)
