my mom works in a Catholic goods store, so people often come in to buy cards or medals of the same saints as their kids names or what not.. she comes across a lot of names at work.

so the other day, a lady comes in with two kids, a boy and a girl, and buys saint Nicholas and saint Cecelia medals. my mom comments on Cecelia's name, how nice it is (it was either that or Adrienne for me, I'm glad I got Adrienne, I think Cecelia is a bit pretentious) and her mom pipes up "yeah, but I didn't want her to be like everyone else, so I spelled it Cecelya!"

so. instead of NOT being like everyone else, and having a somewhat uncommon name like Cecelia, she gets to be JUST like everyone else, and have an unnecessary Y in the midst of her misspelled name. yay.

I kind of wonder if Nicholas was spelled Nicholys. being a much more common name than Cecelia, you know?

Cecelya looks like a medication.

Gross.

My middle name is Cecelia, and if I'd been a boy I was supposed to be called Nicholas.

So Cecelya makes me sad.

There is a line - and not a fine one either - between 'being different' and 'looking illiterate'. I do wish people would think about it...

Wow... if there's anything worse than misspelling a common name, it's misspelling an uncommon name. Cecilia is pretty though. I havea friend by that name. And I of course love Nicholas because it's my husband's name and my son's middle name.

ugh. my name is lyndsey and i hated it growing up. i don't know which is worse- people spelling their child's name wrong on purpose or, like my mother, thinking that they are spelling it properly.

You're right--it doesn't make her unique at all, it makes her just like every other girl who will have an unnecessary 'Y' in her name. Poor kid. I'd slap that woman.
