What's the feeling on Mia? How is it pronouced?
Me-uh or my-uh? I've always pronounced my-uh as Maya and me-uh Mia, but i dont know if that's just me...

Mia = me-uh

It's nice, but not something I'd use.

In Australia, at least, Mia is almost always Me-uh

Me-uh, My-uh would be mya i suppose, or perhaps maya, but i would say that as may-ah! It's nice though, isn't it normally short for Amelia?

I can't give you an unbiased response because it's my middle name. Ugh. I detested it growing up because it sounded so weak and was so teasable. I am staggered to see it going up the charts now - is this *all* because of Kate Winslet's daughter? Even the ultra-popular Ava required a larger celeb presence before everyone else jumped on its bandwagon.

As for pronunciation, it's generally pronounced to rhyme with the first part of Chia Pet or the last part of, um, diarrhea. (And I do wish I had pulled those examples out of the blue, but no such luck.)

I have always pronounced it Me-uh.

I love it, we liked Amelia w/ the nn Mia should we have a girl. But, we're having another boy LOL ;)

My boyfriend is convinced that if we have a daughter someday, we're naming her Mia. I like the name (pronounced me-uh), but I don't necessarily want to use it. Maybe for a cat or something. :) (Only because there are other girl's names that I like so much better.) I do think it's a really cute name, though.

I had no idea it was such a popular name! Somebody said it's #17 right now. Weird. I do think it's really cute, though. :) (And boo to whoever teased you about it!)

I think Mia is Me-uh only. Maya is My-uh. I don't like Mia at all. Maya is okay.

I can't believe people teased you over Mia!! WTF? I mean I think it's kinda stretching things a bit to find things to say about a simple name like Mia!

my-uh as Maya and me-uh Mia, I agree.

Eh, kids'll tease about anything that stands out as different (or anywhere they sense a weakness), so if it hadn't been that, I'm sure they would have found something else!

For instance, in preschool, there was a girl in class named Sara Longley. She wore short dresses that showed her long slender legs, so the kids taunted her as "Sara Longlegs," like the spider. It's not as if there is anything wrong with having long legs, but Sara reacted to the teasing (which was pretty consistent, actually; people weren't very kind to her), and that was incentive enough for the teasing to continue. :( We're really quite uncivilized little animals at that age.

The name thing, well, the only lasting effect that had was to leave a bit of bad feeling about the name. It wasn't an attack on my being, only a poking because of a name. But poor little Sara... after all these years, I still wonder what happened to her.

(Sara, if you are out there reading, I apologize on behalf of your classmates.)

PS - They're both okay to me; I like Maya better, but that's because she was a character on my favorite show, I'm sure, LOL.

it's derived from latin, so IMO that would make it Me-uh, but i have heard it pronounced My-ah too, which could be b/c it means 'mine'.

I've always pronounced it Me-uh. I would think My-ah would be spelled Maya or something similar.
