We frequently watch The News Hour on PBS (one of the few news shows I don't feel stupider after watching)... anyways, one of the commentators last night was named: Shailagh

If Gwen Ifill didn't pronounce it I would have been stumped.  It's the same as Shaela/Shayla

I think Shaila would have been fine, I don't know why there's the "extra" -gh there.

usually i have a tough time figuring out how to pronounce names... but for some reason that instinctually read "Shayla" to me.

I'm not an expert or that smart on name origins but it sounds almost Irish/Scottish to me and I've noticed first and surnames of celtic/gaelic origins often have that -gh.

I didn't read the entire post before I tried to pronounce it, and I have to say I had no idea Shailagh was suppose to = Shayla. Even if it is the irish spelling, personally I think it looks awful. :\

my family is from scotland ending something in gh or dh isn't creative spelling its silent letters in irsh or scottish influenced gaelic.

I've only ever seen it spelled Shailagh, and maybe it's just because I'm used to it, but I think that spelling is so much prettier than Shayla or Shaila.
