WDYT about Shirley for a boy? An old friend had a dream I had a boy called Shirley lol. According to behind the name it's a unisex name meaning "bright clearing".

I knew a boy in 5th grade named Shannon. He wasn't bothered by it until 6th grade and puberty and all that. I always called him Shay because ugh. Just ugh.

My mom's name is Shirley so I can't really picture it on a boy.

You just reminded me of this: there were two Shannons on my high school swim team - one was a really tall senior guy, and one was a very short freshman girl. They were known as Big Shannon and Little Shannon. Big Shannon didn't have any problems with his name, but I don't know what it was like for him as a 6th grader.

It makes me think of Anne of Green Gables - this was her youngest son's name. I'm not overly fond of it, I think it's more off-limits on a boy than Lindsay or Ashley would be. Then again, I'm not in love with it on a girl either.

haha I like it. I tend to like most feminine names on boys though.

It was a boys' name until the early twentieth century, I gather: it's not my style but it's not completely out of the box.

Makes me think of the Anne of Green Gables series. Shirley was Anne's most pointless kid, he never made any difference to the story or added anything of interest. Even the child who died shortly after birth had a chapter devoted to the day she lived...

Anyway, that's what Shirley on a boy makes me think of. Not a fan.
