My SO loves the name Ishmael. Loves. And it is so hard to pull names out of him that he really likes.

I do not like the name Ishmael. I really want to learn to like it, but it is something about the 'ish' sound that I really dislike. And there is nothing really you could shorten it to. Except maybe Ish. Which...yeah. And there are the obvious other connotations, which would just get old. Especially since he wants Ishmael to be the middle name that he just goes by. No, my dear, he is not going to get a kick out of telling people to "call him Ishmael" 750 gazillion times.

How do you feel about Ishmael?

What are some names that your SO likes that you really don't?

It's literarily archaeic and awful. :(

I dont have anything against the name, i just don't like how it sounds.

My boy LOVES Havok. Heh. I guess it's some comic thing. And yet he doesn't like Gideon because of the comic book reference? Oy. Boys are strange creatures.

My husband loves the names Nicole and Renee for girls, which I cannot STAND. Every girl I have personally known with either name has been a raging bitch, but he loves both names. I would probably never use either if we have a daughter.

I actually like Ishmael. :) I wouldn't ever use it as a first name, but there are worse things in life than being named after a Melville novel. I'd much rather be an Ishmael than a Kharleigh or a Xxxandyr or something. ;)

Still, if you really hate it he shouldn't use it. My husband and I have veto power over names because neither of us would want a child growing up with a name that one of their parents absolutely hated.
He loves Eileen, and I just don't get it. To me that is a middle age-chain smoking receptionist's name.

I love Ishmael. What do you think about Ismail though? Thats the Arabic version, and it doesn't have the "Ish" in it. You could probably spell it Ismael too.

No, don't really care for Ishmael. *makes mental note to never mention the name to husband*

My husband is the same way. His current obsession is Alexander which I just don't care for.

I like that suggestion, actually, and I don't even like Ishmael. Ismail looks a lot better to me for some reason.

My SO likes Giles, which, while I don't hate it, I don't love it either, and it doesn't work with any of the other names we like and especially doesn't work with his last name.

its like pulling teeth to get a name out of my guy that isnt zoe (which is the one girl name he is in love with, which i also love, but his highly lovable niece is named that so its out) the only other name i have gotten out of him is zack. which i happen to hate. awesome.

NOT a fan of ishmael. i know a kid named that who goes by ish. its kind of terrible.

I kind of like Ishmael. Would only use it for a middle name though.

My bf likes Ezekiel, which I think is awful and hickish. His taste is decent in general though.

I know a boy name Ishmael and he goes by Izzy. I don't know if that's any better than Ish, but I'm just putting that out there.

As far as my opinion of Ishmael, I'm with you. The "ish" is a weird sound in a name.

And my boyfriend was dead set on Petunia when he found out the baby is a girl. Thank God we agreed on Amelia!

I agree. Ismael or even Izmael could totally work for me, though.

But I like the "going by the middle name" thing, I'm that weird, I'll admit.
I don't think it's hard, it's just like having a middle name that no one knows/uses, except in this case it's the first name :)

My husband loves names like Miroslav, Jaroslav, and a bunch of Finnish names that we just couldn't get away with in the US--it all stems from his hockey obsession. We haven't an ounce of Finnish blood in us, and I don't want to give our kid a name that no one (at least on this side of the Atlantic) will ever be able to pronounce!

The whole Ishmael thing sounds like something my hubby would do, too. Men. OY.

I agree about Ezekiel, but it can work in a few cases. I knew an Ezekiel who never ever went by that name--but he didn't go by Zeke, either. He was always Zico (ZEEK-O)--and that's how he wrote it, spelled exactly like that. It worked for him.
