[identity profile] thellamaqueen.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I posted yesterday looking for first names that worked with the middle name Betsy.
My husband and I talked about it some more, and started looking for more first names that could be shortened to use Betsy as a nickname... and we stumbled across a name we both liked:  Bridgette.
Would it be feasible to say that Betsy could be a nickname for Bridgette?
I was to the point of finding any female name with a B, an E and a T in it and shortening it to Betsy when we found this name... but I think it works... WDYT?
Also: our last name is Beedon.  Is "Betsy Beedon" too cutesy sounding?  I'm growing accustomed to the sound of Bridgette Beedon... but Betsy Beedon, I'm not so sure of.
One of our Aunt Betsys also has a last name that starts with a B (a different name from ours), and I think it sounds very cute together, but the cuteness fits her well.

I'm sorry all I keep thinking of is Betsy Wetsy. >_< I feel bad for this because I know you're trying to honor you're aunts.

What about Bette? and the nn Betsy. I can't see Betsy in Bridgette. But than again I can't see Peggy in Margaret. So who am I to say.

I like Bridgette, very nice name.
I knew a girl in grade school whose given name was Blythe, but everyone called her Betsy as a nickname.

I prefer Bridie as the nickname, but that's cute, too.
But I can relate--we're having the same trouble with double Bs. Our last name is Beal and we like Benjamin but we're a bit worried Ben Beal sounds stupid.

I like Bridgette/Betsy~ it's adorable.

I also grew up with a girl named Elizabeth, who went by Betsy, so there's that.

I think it's cute.

But then, I'm the girl who wants to name my daughter Caroline and call her Charlie, lol

Betsy Beedon sounds like a character from a children book series. She sounds spunky though. Mainly because I always think of Betsey Johnson. Which is also why I prefer the spelling with the extra E.

I think that anything could be a nickname for anything, but I really dislike the idea of picking a name for a child with a nickname already in mind, or so that you can use that nickname. If you like Betsy and want to call her Betsy, name her Betsy.

Yeah, but if they went with just Betsy as the full first name, then there'd be people going, "That sounds too nicknamey."

I think it's good that they're going with a longer given name, so the baby has a choice as an adult.

I think you/she get to choose the short form: you don't have to follow some kind of rules. I'm known as Gnome, which I don't think is a "standard" short for anything...

I think both Betsy and Bridgette are nice names, but I don't really see how one could be a nn for the other. I mean, I guess you could have a Bridgette and call her Cindy or whatever, it's your choice, and nn don't always make immediate sense to others. But IMO Betsy has been a nn for Elizabeth for CENTURIES, so if people see it, they will automatically think Elizabeth. Your little girl will have a lifetime of explaining ahead.

But...Bridgette's such a gorgeous name. Why not just go with that? :-)
